MediaMarkt getting a refund after buying a product that's incompatible to my device

Bought a music player from Media Markt on Thursday turns out it's not iphone compatible, so want to take it back for refund.

Any idea of the law out here in case they get funny as id just like to buy elsewhere and get a compatible one. Also i bought it on friends credit card as they wouldn't accept my english card, does that mean i have to drag him back?

Any pointers most appreciated.

1) In future do your research before you buy a device.

2) If its open and used then Media Markt may refuse the refund as otherwise they have to take back an open and used electrics device, which they usually cannot then re-sell.

3) Yes, obviously if someone else bought it for you on a credit card that is not yours, you will need to take them back with you to refund onto that card.

EDIT - Hah sorry acen didn't recognise your username, just add a kissy smiley to my post.

As Richdog says. They might, out of goodwill, accept to exchange for something else in the shop- but are very likely to refund, especially if packaging open.

Not been opened and yep, seeing as i was testing with an iphone i thought the assistant would say so.

Im never hasty in purchasing anything, normally over the top doing my research on this occassion i went with it, which makes me even more annoyed!!!

Well you never know. Go back to the same shop and talk to the same guy- he might see he was partly to blame and make a 'gesture' if the box is not opened. However he is more likely to offer an exchange within the shop. Tell us how you get on.

Different shops have different rules, but normally the conditions are:

i. Product in the original packaging and, if opened, in a resalable condition

&

ii. Proof of purchase i.e. receipt. (Some shops might be forgiving if you have lost the receipt but can remember the time and date of purchase, from say, looking it up with internet banking.)

&

iii. The product is being returned within a specified time (at Mediamarkt within 2 weeks).

I have worked at a couple of different shops in Switzerland and most things were taken back if the preceding conditions were met (and also sometimes not depending on the obnoxiousness of the customer).

I've taken stuff back a few times to MediaMarkt in Basel, and always got a refund, without quibble. In one case, I'd used the product, but it turned out not to work with my device.

Re: MediaMarkt getting a refund after buying a product that's incompatible to my devi

===UPDATE====

Ok so i popped back to the store last night with my friend who originally paid for it on his Swiss bank card.

Spoke to the lady at the front desk, who gave me a ticket, and ushered me onto the redcoat people looking after the speaker area.

I explained to a young assistant my predicament that it seemd incompatible, with iphones, a small discussion as she insisted it should be ok to play music at least, which it is in theory. I backed up my arguement with a chat i had with Harmon Kardon support.

She agreed in the end and offered me a credit note. Which i really didn't want as im heading home Wednesday not sure when ill be back. So asked again, explaining my iminent return journey and she muttered this her supervisor who was lurking/observing. Meanwhile some other assistant was rifling through the box checking everything. Then he nodded/grunted in an unapproving manner and walked off.

She said ok here you are, a cash refund has been approved, go to the cash till.

So there you have it, it was a bit uncomfortable and i couldn't thank the young assistant enough as it seems their standard policy is exchange only let alone cash back refund, and you could see she was in a predicament herself.

Lesson learnt which again im usually so cautious, be aware of iphone and ipod devices they aren't all compatible and of course do a bit of homework before you rush in an commit to a purchase, saves alot of hastle and carrying a frikkin 6kilo box for miles across Zurich on buses n trains

Thanks again for your advice people. Happy friday.

In Basel, I've always been offered the choice of a refund or a credit note. I guess different stores have different policies.

What's peoples' experience with Mediamarkt refunds and packaging that can _not_ be resealed?

I happened to buy a Bluetooth dongle that comes in one of those awful, impossible to open, melt-sealed plastic display horrors that you can't pry open without a welding torch and crowbar. Turns out the chipset won't work with the media center in question. Never would've thought to even check for something like this. BT's just supposed to work!

The loss isn't huge, but I'm a bit irritated at the whole packaging style. It's obviously designed to frustrate _and_ prevent returns. Grr.

I think MediaMarkt is a franchise*, so maybe it depends on the owner a bit more.

*Twas the explanation given on EF** for them not publishing prices online.

Interesting. Lugano (Grancia) never offers cash back (only credit) so this indeed must be the policy.
