where do you meet new friends in Switzerland?

Hi!

I am sure, for many of you this topic will sound childish, but I really would like to find out what are the best places to meet new people and make friends in Switzerland (Basel or Zurich in particular).

Even though I am in Switzerland for almost 3 years, 2.5 of them I was in relationships which took all my time. Consequently I was kind of a person who never went out (only with my BF), and ended up with almost all my “friends” being his friends whom I have nothing in common anymore.

And now, waking up today, I realized that the only thing I could do for another nice and long weekend (or at least it was the only thing that pop up in my mind) is either travelling alone or staying at home with the book (not bad, but it still makes me feel somehow pathetic).

Therefore, any ideas, advices or suggestions where a young woman (so please without advising any thing that could endanger my wellbeing ) could meet some new people are welcome.

Cheers,
FunkyDonkey

The Viadukt Markthalle most Thursday evenings would be a good start. If you go to the British cheese stall before 20:00, Mr Grumpygrapefruit will direct you to the assembled masses.

Catch trams 4 or 13 to Dammweg.

Good thing I saw this.
Steer clear of the folk on this forum.
Nastly bunch, the lot of them.

Okay, enough pun.
Take a look at the events calendar and drop by.
I have heard its a ball.

I have still to understand why I haven't been to one yet.

EDIT : DB beat me to it.

Despite what you read of them/from them, theer are some great EF'ers out there. Myself and CJ regularly meet the best and have had some great times.

As said, get yourself out to the events. Viadukt is the best start.

Re: where do you meet new friends in Switzerland?

Funkydonkey, not childish at all. Most of us have been guilty of being in that situation once in our lives.

Its ok to like your own company but we all need social interaction as well. For Zurich, the suggestion of the viaduct on Thursdays by UTH and DB is a good one. I started out with a smaller group when I first arrived and fellow member Paula staurt's mid week drinks is a good start.

If you like pool and socialising, JLF does one every other month and sygirl/slaphead do Friday drinks occasionally too. basher organises the A-Z of dining here in Zurich where they check out various restaurants around the city and its a good start to meet people outside bars.

Good luck, hope to see you around. I am sure I'll remember this unqiue nickname

A bit closer to your location, for next Tuesday (and there doesn't appear to be too many "trouble-makers" signed up):

http://www.englishforum.ch/calendar....=2011-6-14&c=1

... and if you're sporty there seems to be a Basel running club and wall climbing club on a regular weekly basis.

Click on Social Events on Events drop-down from top menu bar.

How about taking a class at Migros-Schule, be it in German, Chinese, belly dancing or pottery, whatever. Or join one of your local clubs in something you find interesting, be it archery, boules, walking, stamp collecting ...
to meet locals rather than just ex-pats.

Re: where do you meet new friends in Switzerland?

I agree on the suggestion to take a course or join a club in a discipline you enjoy doing.
That would help if we knew a bit more about you and your tastes, but I add a few suggestions.

- join a choral / music band / gym club / ... They are everywhere in this country.
- look for coachsurfers that are open to meet for a coffee in your area (couchsurfing.org) They are usually very friendly people, most speak many languages, and you can look for some that have common interest with you, to hep breaking the ice.
- go to the next event / free festival / market and be friendly. I know many of my compatriotes are not easy to break in, but they are exceptions (like myself!) and you may meet them.
- go to the library, see if there are animations that you may like (as you like book) and join in.

Just a note: In Switzerland, it may not be easy to meet new friens in a new place, even for a swiss person. (Even in the place I consider now friendly - like my beloved Lausanne - and even if I was only coming from 60 km away...) So don't take their coldness personnally.

Re: where do you meet new friends in Switzerland?

Hei FunkyDonkey! It's not a childish question. I myself joined EF in search of nice people to meet around Zürich, coz I haven't found any friends in the last 3 years

Now that I am back from holidays, I'm going to try the Saturday night drinks "hosted" by The Scotsman

Zurich Saturday Drinks, 8pm onwards

Maybe you should try to come too?
