Camping stuff/shops in Germany (near Basel)?

Hello you Basel EFers.

Anyone know of any camping shops around the Basel area over the border in Germany?

I'd like to get a tent and want to cash in on my 19% VAT discount and the oh-so-weak Euro...*

Thanks!

*I just put that in for any TTers reading this...

I don't know how far you want to travel, but I think the French company Decathlon is hard to beat for value on a range of sporting goods (including camping).

There are seven shops in Alsace, including one in Mulhouse.

http://www.decathlon.fr/

Just click on "Nos magasins" for precise locations.

Thanks. I know Decathlon quite well, but the tax back options for France aren't as good, so that's my fall back option. Looking for a D option if poss.

Would you also consider going to France? Decathlon up near Mulhouse has a good range of camping stuff and they also do tax refunds via the 'Global Blue' company. They fill in the form at the shop - just show your passport/auslanderausweis. Then get it stamped at the border in the French toll, send the form off and a few weeks later the VAT is refunded to your card or sent as a cheque. There are two decathlon shops, both are listed on the website (www.decathlon.fr, only in french) and you can also order and reserve goods to be picked up when convenient. This is a good idea as Decathlon's stock control isn't good - I've lost count of the number of times I've popped to decathlon for something for them to have nothing in the relevant size or range.

What sort of tent - family, backpacking, two-man (no homo), wig-wam? yurt? big top?

The suitability of the shop would depend on the sort of tent you want.

One that keeps out the rain and mosquitos and doesn't cost more than 200 CHF.

Other than that, I don't know. I'd like to look around. That's why I'm asking...

Yeah, found that and these ones too seaching on the internet this morning:

Intersport Gemo
Hauptstrasse 315-317
79576 Weil Am Rhein

K1 Sport + Bergwelt
Hauptstraße 52

Although Kandern is a bit far (as far as Decathlon is in France)...

To be fair, they were all posted at around the same time, a case of cross posting methinks.

Re: Camping stuff/shops in Germany (near Basel)?

There's also a sports shop in Lorrach - Sportmuller - in the town center.

They stock a few tents, and more on order. Managed to get a 5-man McKinley one in the shop that fitted the bill nicely for ~200 EUR.

Worked fine this weekend, although I'm not as young as I used to be... will be heading off to pick up a camping chair and thicker floor mat before I go next time... to think I used to do this all the time as a yoof...
