Hi all - we move into our 1st Swiss apartment in Meilen on Sunday - excited! We are 30 something couple and looking for some tips about local treasures

Like places to go for walks, local places to eat /drink / shop. Basically anything you've learned from living in meilen that you'd like to pass on to some outsiders!

Well I'm a keen open water swimmer, so guess in summer I'll be hitting the lake, and in winter the hallenbad! We're both pretty sporty - into footie, tag rugby, anything social really.

Are Irish - so like to meet people and have a few drinks and enjoy ourselves too

I second that Thai orchid is one of my favorites.
There is another gym on Seestrasse in Obermeilen a few of my friends go there and comes highly recommended, do your own comparison.
Above Meilen is a place called Togwill (village) the local resturant there is very good, cheap and has a good beer garden.
The butcher at Volg has great meat but it is not cheap.
The whole place is full of Wanderwegs (walking paths) get a map of the area from the Germaide and follow the yellow signs.
It is worth joining the library their range of english books is good and free DVD hire (2 per week)
There is a drink store up the hill a bit, good range of foreign beers and will order something if they don't have it. Cheapest Coopers beer (Aussie) I have found.
That should get you started.

Any tips for other nice places to grab a beer or meet people?

You mean to say that the 'welcome to Meilen' DVD you'd have received when you registered at the Gemeinde wasn't helpful?! At CHF90 it really isn't the best value is it, especially as it didn't even have Troy McClure presenting

The best bet for a drink/eat in the summer are the restaurants and bars along Seestrasse between the Herrliberg and Winkel train stations - probably a 10 min walk from either.

So we tried the Thai ... great food. Bit pricey, not an every week sort of thing but excellent I must admit.

About dragonboat - how does that work, is it social or more serious?

Did you find the Tri swim training in the Meilen pool. I saw a course is starting Dec 2nd. I also live in meilen & am trying to improve my swimming for some long distance Triathlons next year. Let me know if you have any experience of the Meilen swim club.
