Bug brothel

I have a little problem at home. Since about 2 weeks, always at dusk (just like zombie movies) a swarm of bugs attacks our balcony (and all the other roof apartments of our building). They are between 1 cm and 2 cm and blue-green metallic colour. They seem harmless enough, but are attracted to humans (as in the buggers fly in MY DIRECTION when I try to shoo them). It looks like a Hitchcock movie, insect style. Since I was never good at baseball, the use of rudimentary bat is also not helping with the freaking plague.

But yesterday the pest took a whole new level and the said bugs decided to use my sun screen as a brothel. There I was trying to enjoy my cold beer, and the buggers were just mounting each other like there is no tomorrow (there was even a gang bang pile of 4 bugs, though I am not totally sure on how that works procriation wise). And leaving black trails all over the sun screen which might cause problems with the vermieter later on (I don’t even want to think about it…)

Does anyone know a possible natural way to kick these guys away? I tried presenting them a bill for the room rent (that seems to shock most guests), but they just flew away carefree.

If they're under 16, you can report it to Mrs Clinton.

Re: Bug brothel

Considering the way they were flying against my windows, I would assume they were drinking vodka or similar. That might not mean much, but I'd assume they are old enough to buy spirits, so I guess I have to leave aunt Clinton alone for now...

my sun screen as a brothel.
You do know that being topless in your balcony can attract all sorts of pests ? Right

Okay, I'll behave...

You should be able to get some horny-bug-repellent from the local migros/coop/denner which can keep them away.

(Hint : This is a trick question )

Re: Bug brothel

Do you have an Iphone ?

Maybe this app http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mosqu...305743758?mt=8 also works against your bugs.

- I have a lamp, that attracts a certain type of flies, even when its off. I tried spraying them with window cleaner, hoping the water particle would make them too heavy and they would fall to the ground, where they would be an easy victim for my boots, but instead they immediately escape through the open window when sprayed. :-)

Doc.

Re: Bug brothel

Blimey, we've got exactly the same problem (in Zurich, near Uetliberg)!
Was sat on my balcony from around 7 til 9 last night, but from 9 onwards it was impossible to stay out there, about 20 of the little blighters.
No idea what they are but they are annoying

Re: Bug brothel

We have been here three years and every year so far we have had this phenomena for about four evenings at this time of year. The biologist in me loves the spectacle, so sit back and enjoy, it's only for a few nights.

By the way, I think they're called cockchafers (stifles schoolgirl giggles).

I am no entomologist, Longbyt, but those seem like the wrong ones. From those pictures they look brown, but the ones we have are green-blue. Something more like this one:

I'll try to make a picture today, but since it's raining like hell, don't know if they are visiting the red light sun screen today.

Re: Bug brothel

They are probably just in a phase of their life cycle that will end soon and they'll leave you alone. But if you want to get some revenge on them, you can trap the little critters easy as pie.

That's one of many designs of traps that work on flying beetles (sounds like what you have) as well as wasps. For beetles try some bits of ripe fruit as bait. Wasps and yellow jackets actually prefer bacon. For real.

The soapy water is key as it reduces the surface tension of the water and allows it to coat their little bodies properly, suffocating them. Just a little drop will do. If you're an alumnus of a photography course a little Kodak Photo-Flo works even better .

Re: Bug brothel

If/when you do find out what kind of insect it is, you can look online to see if there is any kind of herb or spice, etc. that you can put on your balcony to keep them away. (Some insects have aversions to such things).

I had a bad problem with ants on our old balcony and found that sprinkling cinnamon around the perimeter worked wonders at keeping them away (and from getting into the house). And so if yours are flying insects, maybe you could make something to hang around your balcony...

Good luck!
