It is personally addressed to you, so he is obliged to deliver it. You get it once you applied for a one of their bonus card programs. Check with Coop/Migros how you can get rid of it.
That makes sense... thinking about it, the same applies to stuff from other shops where I have a customer card - it just isn't so noticeable as they don't send out their stuff so often.

Believe it or not, yes, postmen/women have to read every mailbox, otherwise they would get fired pretty quickly. But most of the stuff we all hate so much is distributed by companies that have nothing to do with the Swiss Post.

Obviously the efficacy of those stickers depends on the person who distributes the unsolicited mail. As I wrote above, it worked a charm here. Maybe they employ visually impaired people in other places.

Here it worked perfectly and from day one we put the sticker on- might be different in a block of flats with lots of mailboxes.

Re: "Bitte Keine Werbung" sticker - where are they obtainable?

I was living in a house in Kt. Aargau until recently and that had a sticker on the post box that was systematically ignored. Whilst in the beginning, as a newcomer to the area, it was quite useful to get the latest store catalogues if only to find out what stores were around, after a few months, it got pretty annoying as the paper collection was only once a quarter.

Here in Kt. Zurich, I'm in an apartment and every mailbox has "Keine Werbung" on a little plate which is integral to the mailbox, much like the name plate. This seems to work really well, apart from business cards from taxi drivers and the occasional flyer from local pizza delivery services - both of which now grace my pinboard.

I'm quite glad I don't have the temptation of the latest special offers from the various stores, even though here we have paper collections once a month!

Maybe the amount of junk mail is inversely proportional to the frequency of paper collections

I don't have a sticker on my mailbox and I love getting all the flyers. We live close to the German border so I get those flyers as well. If I have clients looking for things I can tell them where the specials are. Last week Aldi had a great deal on safety gates and I have a client who needed some.

But I have to admit that my reason for not putting the sticker on the box had more to do with the delivery person. He lives in my village. A long time ago, he told me he doesn't like dogs, because he is afraid of them. I wanted to fix that. Often I am outside with the dogs when he is delivering the flyers. At first he was terrified to come anywhere near the house. Now he walks up the path, and he actually smiles. The dogs don't bark at him.

The way these deliveries work, the more flyers he has to deliver, the longer it takes and the more he gets paid.

We have recycling every 3 months in our village, so yes, the papers do pile up, as we also have newspaper and magazine subcriptions. I often take the papers to the recycling depot myself.

Re: "Bitte Keine Werbung" sticker - where are they obtainable?

Answer: in any hardware store, cobblers (aren't there a lot of cobblers here?) or even your own hand written one is enough. It's down to the person if they respect your sign - not the sign itself - as to whether you get spammed.

They're a funny breed, these flyer droppers. They can often be found very late at night going along the street with their little trolleys. They seem to come from every demographic - which ought not to surprise but does. There's an old transvestite soul in my area whom I've never seen during daylight hours but S/He's looking a million Dollars at 3am.

Could just be the beer goggles, though...

I bet Angry Swiss Dude doesn't have a problem with junk mail. Perhaps someone could ring his doorbell to ask him how he does it?

Great. Thanks all! Very helpful. You'd think the post office would offer those, but I tried last week and they don't and the girl didn't speak enough English to help me figure out where to get them.
