About to propose to a Swiss

Hoi Everyone,

I'm going to propose to my Swiss gf soon but i still want to know more about the Swiss culture, (specially the Swiss lovers culture ) i really want to surprise her and her family when i visit them.

I haven't got the chance to deeply understand the Swiss culture as we live abroad so things won't be the same if we live in Switzerland. so i'll be glad to hear anything from you guys.

So please any advises (what should i do and what should not do) will be appreciated.

Best Regards.

Re: About to propose to a Swiss

From a mountain top, you should yodel your proposal across the valley to her standing on the opposite mountain top.
She should then send her reply (acceptance or otherwise) using an alphorn ..... and if you hear loud bangs, that'll be the father firing his cannon.

You'll soon find out, if it's to "announce" the engagement ........ or not.

I'm not sure what you mean exactly by "the Swiss lovers culture"... but perhaps I should warn you that it's illegal to have an orgasm on a Sunday here.

Just kidding, of course...

Well, kinda.

Re: About to propose to a Swiss

Nice thread.

There's nothing particular in Swiss Culture about proposing....

Ask her dad, propose her if he accepts.

Could be funny if you wear one of our funny traditional costume (depending from where she is)

Good Luck and have a nice Life with her.

It's very good to know that there's nothing particular in Swiss culture about proposing .. i feel so good about it now!

And i think i'm going to ask her dad, hope they will like me but do you think i should give them a gift? if so, do you recommend anything?

I read that if i want to win a Swiss person's heart SAY

CHUCHICHÄSCHTLI and CHÄS-CHÜECHLI is that true?

I like the traditional costume idea, i'm definitely going to do something about it... She's from Zurich.

Thank you so much, you don't know how much you helped me!

To prevent the worst...

I doubt this will go down too well with your gf if you ask her father first.

The dressing up in a costume ideia I am not sure about either.

Yes, Please no costumes and don't ask the father. It's a moment between you and her, not her parents decision, and not Fasnacht.

Re: About to propose to a Swiss

Sorry but I think the costume idea is really erm.....erm...

Asking the parents first is encouraged in certain cultures but not a must. Proposal wise, I personally will encourage you to keep it simple and heartfelt.

Write a speech on how you want to spend the rest of your life with her, get someone to translate it into Swiss German (Züritüütsch preferably since she is from Zürich), learn it by heart and say it to her perfectly accented and pronounced.

PS: just make sure your translator is trustworthy - if you know what I mean

viel Glück!

I, too, would ditch the costume idea. Asking her father is more of a tradition-thing from the times when a girl came with a dowry. Nowadays, it's more common to see women living independently on a very nice wage with no help nor say-so from daddy, thank you very much..

If you want to impress her, take her to a nice restaurant, build up the mood, take out the ring and propose there. If you want to nod in the direction of tradition you could still ask her father but do it after you have proposed to your girlfriend so it's just a token gesture.
