Moving to Lugano in October - various questions!

Hi,

I'm moving to Lugano from Portland, Oregon (USA) to work. I would love advice and insight on the following:

Average cost of a nice 1-2 bedroom apartment with a view of the lake?

Best place to buy vintage/antique furniture?

Is there any kind of independent music scene or will I need to go to Milan for concerts?

Are there any English language churches?

I will need to find a Swiss bank. Any recommendations?

Thanks for any help. It will be my first time living in Switzerland. Time to learn Italian!

You didn't specify whether you were Catholic or Protestant. If you are Catholic, then I think I've found two churches in the Lugano area that have English services. I don't know if this information is still accurate, though:

http://www.thecatholicdirectory.com/...&siteid=115728

This is what I found for the Church of England:

http://www.stedwards.ch/

Here's information I have on a Mormon "ward" in Lugano. While I can't guarantee that services will be in Italian, I'm sure many of the missionaries there speak English and will help you fit in:

Re: Moving to Lugano in October

Hi RianR,

Welcome to Lugano (for when you get here).

Having recently moved to Lugano myself I can give you a few tips. Firstly you need this website

www.comparis.ch

You can check rental prices, health insurance (legal requirement) and lots of other things on there and you can look at it in English

It is definetely worth getting a lake view if you can afford it, these are hard to come by in town but if you are happy living a bit outside (and have a car) then you should be able to find something affordable.

With regards to music you will find very little in Lugano, that goes for nightlife too. Lugano is VERY quiet so you need to be prepared for that but it is beautiful (I LOVE living here so do not think I am being negative). Milan you can find some good gigs Steve Malkmus and the Fleet foxes are playing in November to name just a couple. But you will not find as many indie gigs in Milan as you will find in Northern Europe, but I find that is a great excuse to go exploring. There are alot of good gigs at Abart in Zurich, which you would not do for an evening but great for a weekend trip.

Anyways, good luck with your move and if you need any advice let me know.

Re: Moving to Lugano in October - various questions!

I've moved this to Other/General which isn't the right place for it really, but at least if gives me the chance to suggest that in future you ask your questions in the relevant forum and not mixed up in Daily Life which is really for things which are thigns which happen in Daily Life in Switzerland and not Helps, Tips, or Requests.

Enjoy the Forum and I hope you settle in well.

Re: Moving to Lugano in October

Thanks for the great advice everyone. Exciting to know that Fleet Foxes will play in Milan in November, they are one of my favorite bands.

I've applied for my Visa and now am trying to find an international moving company and perusing Comparis.ch for apartment ideas and health insurance. What a great site!

I think I will love it in Lugano and expect that it will have many things Portland, Oregon does not. I'll certainly miss the quirky mix of yoga studios, art shows, music scene and international food... but who can complain while looking at that gorgeous lake or exploring the local mountains?

Looking forward to the big move and doing my best to stay patient as work permits are pending and my visa is processing.

Thanks again!

Re: Moving to Lugano in October - various questions!

Hey,

as a former glasweigan (from Glasgow, Scotland in case you dont know the term) im used to a huge music scene and so yes when i moved to lugano i was disappointed. But to be honest, living here is really wonderful and although i miss going to gigs, I find I can do other things here I could never have done back in Glasgow (like sitting outside in the sun for dinner....!).

Milan is good for gigs, but if you dont have a car you have to be wary of the timings of the last train back to lugano.... may inhibit your experience a little...

Hello,
I live in Lugano and know one lady that is a yoga teacher. The problem is that she lives in Tenero (not so far if you have a car). She speaks English. Here is it her website www.antayoga.ch. The web site is in italian and german but if you are interested i can translate for you
