Back in my hayday, I used to help my farmer friends rake the hay in the fields. Yup, I was one of those bikini-top toting, short shorts beauties that actually had shaved under their arms.

But I digress. For our z'vieri, we would be served hot watered-down coffee from a thermos and were urged to be generous with the schnapps. Believe it or not, it really did cool us down after a hot day of field work.

...and you think comments like this help during the heat. AC units will be forced into overdrive if pics are posted.

Re: Lack of air conditioning and frost-free fridges in Switzerland

Well as a Romande the last thing I want is to have 'l'air con' (= to look lie a tw*t)!

We have natural air conditioning here, it's called 'living in the Jura mountains' - and it's free. However warm the day - the nights always cool down enough for a good night's sleep, and I am very grateful.

Will defrost the fridge tomorrow - not that hard really. You can also buy a 'stop the frost pad' to put in your ice compartment- from
www.hobby-online.ch Tapis anti-givre CHF 12.50 - a bargain and it works.

a lot cheaper and better for the environment.

Am I the only one to find it odd that someone from India complains about the heat and lack of air conditioning in Switzerland??
Nothing odd about it at all: when I used to work with children from all around the world back in England, the children who complained the most about the heat were those from Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Oman.

In countries like those, anyone who can have AC does have AC. I should imagine India is pretty much the same these days.

It's not just the AC prevalence. Before electricity it was the same situation. Heat and sun are plagues to hot countries - there are no "sun seekers" or "sun worshippers" in Tunisia. The aim of each day is to see as little of the sun as possible. In Morocco there's a special house design called a riyad, built around a courtyard so one can get fresh air while in perpetual shade.

Speaking of air-conditioning, my colleagues at work refuses to switch on the AC when we are in the room. Instead their theory is one should on the AC after work (even for the long weekend) so that the chairs etc. are cool enough when we come to work. And they claim you will get back pain if you sit in an air-conditioned room for long.

... Any insight on this?
Yes. They're all insane.

now i just wonder "why?"!
  • "Mir bruuched das nöd i de Schwiiz!" aka "we don't need that in Switzerland!"
  • Legal restrictions (At least in some cantons you need a special permit if you want to install air conditioning beyond a certain cooling capacity. The permit is only granted if you can prove that you actually "need" the air conditioning. However I don't know what the criteria for said "need" are, but regular residential buildings are most certainly out of luck.)
  • Most people/landlords/businesses probably think it's not a worthy investment if it's only needed during a few weeks or months every year.

AC is not the norm here. Without looking at your profile, would I be right in guessing you are from the US. Bad for the environment.
Well, a central cooling system would probably be quite a bit more efficient than if half the tenants buy their own, relatively inefficient mobile air conditioners....

Most offices don't have them either.
That's because no one ever bothered to calculate the loss of productivity caused by excessive heat in the workplace.
Most bigger office buildings have some kind of central ventilation system anyway. Adding a cooling unit would not be that much of a deal.

AC and heating are approached in a much more sustainable way too. Our little 'housing estate' here has geothermal heating. I haven't seen many gas/oil/coal heated houses here, like I would expect to see in the US/UK.
Sorry to pop your bubble, but the overwhelming majority of buildings in Switzerland is heated by oil or gas and many buildings which were constructed more than about two decades ago are poorly insulated and not efficient at all unless they have been retrofitted. Don't be fooled by the Minergie hype... those are mostly buildings from the last few years.

Though I like A/C as much as the next man, I agree that at least for flats here, the vast majority of the time it's not needed (offices full o' computers, trains etc are another story). One thing I do miss at home on hot summer nights are insect screens on windows...

One of the first thing we did on arrival here was to get proper 'bug' screens on all windows. You can buy much cheaper velcro fitted version though- why not fit them for your main windows?

But then air condition would make much more sense than stupid fans, wouldn't it?

Are you serious about that? I am genuinely wondering the rationale behind the practice. Seriously. I thought maybe it is really true that Swiss/Europeans don't like drafts. But is it really so bad that it will cause back pain?

Re: Lack of air conditioning and frost-free fridges in Switzerland

I think its an overhyped thing. Obviously being sat in a draft that only effects a certain part of the body will result in a muscle or a small group of muscles becoming colder than muscles that it/they are connected to, making it less flexible and increasing the chance of a strain.

Whether or not that actually happens however, I have my doubts.

Darn it, I'd finally managed to cool down after a week of scorching weather and now you've gone and made me all hot again.
