Swiss air cancellation

Swiss air e-mailed my wife to tell us that a flight that we had booked several months ago has been cancelled. I was due to travel with my wife and son (2 & 1/2) to Poland from Cyprus for Christmas as we do every year. Does anyone know what our rights are? To get our money back would not be enough to re book again as it too late for early booking benefits. Our old price was around 650 Euros all in and now would cost 380 EACH! What can we do?

Re: Swiss air cancellation

Nice first post. I suppose you assume were are Swiss experts here. What do Swiss say and what are the booking conditions_ Generally you get your money back in full pretty smartly.

Just be thankful you were not with easyJet. They once cancelled a flight I was on ten minutes before boarding...

Re: Swiss air cancellation

I don't think you have much recourse, unfortunate as that sounds. Airlines have a clause when you agree to their terms and conditions that they can cancel the flight and give you a refund. Compensating you for missing out on early booking deals with other airlines is out of their area of responsibility.

Can't you try shopping around a bit more? Maybe you'll find something a bit cheaper if you are patient and willing to maybe go via another destination.

Re: Swiss air cancellation

You're not the first person to be affected by this cancellation of flights out of Cyprus. I don't know what Swiss are playing at.

All I can suggest is that you get onto the Cyprus Airways website sharpish and get the last of the Christmas seats to anywhere in central Europe before all the other affected travellers wise up to it. If you can get to Vienna or Berlin, the hop to Poland shouldn't be impossible. You could even catch the train if the worst came to the worst.

Good luck!

Re: Swiss air cancellation

If you paid by credit card, you may have some kind of subsequent loss cover with the associated travel insurance you get when you book tickets.

As someone has said before, subsequent loss is not covered, and these kind of risks have to be insured against with additional cover. These are the times when you kick yourself for not ticking that "20Chf" travel insurance when you booked.

I am still at a loss as to how you booked this route through Swiss Air. I cant get a price from them on their website for this route.

Speak to your credit card provider....

Aha ! Not just the flight, but the whole route ? That sucks.

I would demand compensation , or at least try. They should be quite amenable. Not like it was the weather or a volcano or strikes... A financial decision by the company will have compensation contingency, the OP will just have to try and get it out of them.

Re: Swiss air cancellation

Cyprus and Poland are EU countries. So for both flights they must let you choose between refund and alternative flight option. They will be very reluctant to do the latter, but mention that you know what Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 says. It applies for flights in and out of the EU.

Of course, if you accepted refund, there is no way out.

As per the previous post, they are liable and must offer alternative flights if requested, this will have been factored into the decision as part of exposure due diligence by the bean counters. It will be cheaper for them to increase their refund offer rather than try and arrange alternative flights. Hence the post.
