Who knows what kind of pear/apple/fruit this is?

I have a tree full of them in the yard, when they first started growing I thought they were pears but now....They are oddly shaped and have "fuzz" on them.

So please enlighten me

I'm afraid I can't help you. There are loads just like them on a tree in our neighbour's garden but she died a couple of weeks ago unfortunately so I can't ask her what they are.

I don't know what it is, but your post could be used as a sticky in the For Sale forum as a guide to 95% of the folks flogging stuff there . Nice clear pics (and dig the disguise).

They are quinces. A totally useless fruit that can only be boiled to make jam/jelly. Cutting them up for boiling is hard work and the taste is disappointing.

Make good compost though...

Thanks you all! Had to wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quince ) them!

I never seen them before and now have to hunt down the Dutch name for them (hint).

So now to look for some recipes....

I read somewhere you can stew them...Maybe with some red wine and cinnamon they are yummie?

My son says they are called kweepeer in Dutch. He's only 11 though and only knows the Dutch he learnt at school in Belgium and I'm not sure about his spelling either.
