Re: What George Orwell might say should he log in tonight.......

I was forced to read Animal Farm TWICE (for two different classes) during high school. In hindsight, I find it 'interesting' that the US educational system pushed that book so much (which I assume is because of its anti-Communist sentiments). Now if only they had also forced us to read the Communist Manifesto and then allowed us to make up our own minds...

It amazes me, actually, how many people in the US still seem to think of Communism as being a "dirty word" -- though that seems to be more prevalent among the older generations.

But what I also find peculiar is that what seems to really be happening in much of the world today is not what took place in Animal Farm, but actually quite the opposite -- a rebellion against the class inequalities resulting from Capitalism.

From Wikipedia //Gilliam [the director] has stated that Brazil was inspired by George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four—which he has admitted never having read[6]—but is written from a contemporary perspective rather than looking to the future as Orwell did. In Gilliam's words, his film was "the Nineteen Eighty-Four for 1984."//

One of my favourite films, but apart from the dystopia of the all pervasive state, there's not too much similarity. When I first saw it I didn't think "Aha, this is a reworking of 1984". I think the key word in the above quote is "inspired".
