Fuses in plugs - are they needed?

Hi,

We want to rewire our UK appliances with Swiss plugs - but most of our UK plugs have fuses in and we can't seem to find any Swiss plugs with fuses. Is this a problem? We've lived elsewhere in the world and our plugs have never had fuses - so is this just a UK oddity? Perhaps because old UK houses don't have circuit breakers? I've tried searching the forum but can't find anything specifically about this - any thoughts very welcome!

No problem, the UK has a ring main of 30 amps, most swiss sockets have fuses / circuit breakers of 10 amps.

We changed all our plugs over before we came and have had no problems despite also wondering about the lack of fuses. You just need to check the voltage of the individual appliances as to whether they will function properly over here.

I recall I got my antenatal class mum friends over and the kids played whilst we fitted over 50 plugs to all our lights and appliances etc. Made it quite fun

Re: Fuses in plugs - are they needed?

No - as PP posted you don't need them in the individual plugs as the ones in the basement (or wherever yours are) are low enough to blow if needed. Things like the cooker will likely have their own fuse in the basement too.

As an advice though - find out where your fuses are and what type they are and have some spares around.

We found out - after our kitchen lights stopped working once that we have a whole extra set of fuses outside the house that we never knew about as well as the ones in the basement. Result = 450CHF to have an electrician come round for 2 minutes work and shove a new fuse in a box we didn't know we had. [Well we know now don't we! ]

Thanks, your responses have put our mind and rest - and we'll try and find out where all our fuses are located!
