How long does it take? [Letters from GB to Switzerland]

Typically, how long does it take for a normal post letter to be delivered from London to Switzerland?

Have been waiting for a letter for around 6 days now . Appreciate your input on this from your experiences.

Thanks so much!

Anything from two days to ten days, in my experience. Usually three or four though.

What is 'normal post'?

This link to Royal Mail will give you something to read while you are waiting.

I meant regular post. Thanks for the link. It was posted on Oct 17th and I am yet to receive it as of today.

Was wondering if it is common or should I ask for a re-post?

Royal mail - do they have priority and economy like swisspost or is it a single mode only?

Re: How long does it take? [Letters from GB to Switzerland]

It varies - Ive had 3 letters sent from the uk on the same day and had 1 arrive after 2 days, one after 3 and one aweek later! If it is important I would assume a week

Re: How long does it take? [Letters from GB to Switzerland]

I just received a normal Royal Mail letter in 4 work days here, and typically parcels within 7 work days from the UK.

Re: How long does it take? [Letters from GB to Switzerland]

Letters are very quick to arrive here - usually 2 working days. If your letter is important and it is still not here by Monday then perhaps ask for a resend?

Re: How long does it take? [Letters from GB to Switzerland]

I ordered birth certificates from the UK - they were dispatched two weeks ago by second class post. Anyone know how long 2nd class UK to Switzerland usually/currently takes. I just wonder if I need to be concerned - when I should consider them lost and reorder, this time by tracked post...

There is not second class post from UK to Switzerland. Except there is something called international economy that takes 56 days, no idea who uses that, as only a tad cheaper.

In UK we only have first and second class post within UK.

Regular International post takes 3 to 5 days. Tracked International may take a day less.

This is what is by the government website:

Certificate fees

Certificates cost £11 and are sent 4 days after you apply.
If you do not have a GRO index reference number, you’ll have to pay £3 extra for each search. Certificates are sent 15 working days after you apply.
If you need the certificate sooner, you can use the priority service for £35. It’ll be sent the next working day if you order by 4pm.
Extra copies are the same price.

There was a time before Christmas and start of Brexit when post was delayed, some letters taking several weeks.

At the moment post and couriers in UK are very good.

It all depends when something is actually put in the postal system.

The website says it was sent second class. I guess that means 56 days... I guess it must be walking or something.

International Economy is not offered to Switzerland. For £1.70 (assuming a 20g letter) you get "International Standard" ("Reliable delivery to Europe in 3-5 business days and rest of World in 6-7 business days.") So they say, but read on.

I've had ordinary C5 envelopes stuck in Swiss Customs (U.S. Customs too) for days for no reason at all since they contained documents, even tax declarations. I use "tracked" often now: it costs £6.75 but at least you know more or less where the item is. Unless you don't bring it to the Post Office to be scanned and just drop it in pillar box. In which case it doesn't get into the tracking system until it reaches its destination country. (I use Click & Drop for all my UK mail: without a P.O. scan the destination country knows you printed out a tracked label but nothing more until it gets scanned at GVA, ZRH or some other airport.) I once sent a letter to Met Life in Providence RI and it never arrived. I sent a follow-up letter "tracked" and the system kept saying, for two weeks, that it was at JFK mail centre. I emailed the USPS complaints section and had a personal answer from the head of USPS for the state of Rhode Island saying it was stuck in U.S. Customs and he couldn't influence them. It arrived at its destination two weeks later.

P.S.: Tracked is not quicker: it is often slower. But at least you know where the letter is. It may help to use the customs sticker automatically printed out with all Click & Drop labels for foreign destinations, even if you just say "letter, 10 g., zero value".

Re: How long does it take? [Letters from GB to Switzerland]

At the end of last year I had to do some to-and-fro-ing with a government department in the UK. Letters were taking more than two weeks to arrive. They would send me something asking for official documents to be returned within 130 days. So two weeks to get here, a few days for me to get the documents, then two weeks to send back... They would then send me documents stating they were closing my case because they hadn't heard from me, if I don't reply to them withing 14 days....

Things improved this year though.
