Help with shipping Xmas ornaments

I have posted before my irritation with the seemingly erratic fees imposed on packages from outside CH in another post and I have basically decided to refrain from having anything sent. However, with Christmas approaching, I have a very important collection of handmade, personalized ornaments that we're made by my grandmother. I have one for every year I have been alive. I also have a bunch for my wife and daughter. They are fabric, so they are light. What should I tell my grandmother to put on the customs form on her side in the US so I don't get hit with import duty. These have no real value, so what does she put as a value? Any suggestions would be great because I have to have them sent over.

Re: Help with shipping Xmas ornaments

As long as the value is less than 100 Sfr and marked as a gift, there should be no problem. Check out the link below from swisspost. As long as it is sent through the post, it shouldn't be a problem. I've found that people that ship things here like to put a higher or more accurate value for insurance purposes and all that does is make me pay ridiculous duty on a seemingly cheap present.

If it's stuff you already own, don't mark it as a gift. I don't really know what you should mark it as, but I think I've read other threads where it was mentioned that you need to mark it as "personal posessions" or something.

I guess I want to really know what to put as its value. They were made, so they have never been bought. How are you supposed to put a value on them?

Re: Help with shipping Xmas ornaments

put a notional value (CHF 5 or something like that) to cover the cost of the materials used to make the ornament. Fill in the description with homemade gift.

Re: Help with shipping Xmas ornaments

I don't know about the tax thing, but I would suggest you not have this mailed. I have send and receive quite a few packages and have had very few problems. Only one or two have gone missing and one I'm sure never was sent. I have faith and a general good feeling about the postal system.

However, this is a package that would break my heart if it was the one in 1,000 that got lost. Isn't there anyone who can hand deliver this to you?

OK, now that I've expressed my fear over your package, let me add that the packages that I send and receive (apart from commercial items that I buy or sell) are usually hand made. I send and receive a lot of hand made stuff and have never paid tax on them. They are listed usually more or less like this: gift, hand made items, with a say CHF20 value. These packages have never even been opened, that I can remember.

Re: Help with shipping Xmas ornaments

I always tell family to mark it with zero value and use the gift declaration as well as something benign in the description such as 'forwarded mail'. The USPS flat rate international boxes are also really great for these sorts of things as they're reasonably priced and I've never had one go missing in any country I've lived.

You are so right. I have a stuffed toy i want to bring over but i dont dare put it in my luggage in case something happens and gets lost. Never had a problem but as Murphys law says its just the one time....

And its a bit big for hand luggage....
