hello,

i'm looking for fruit and veg markets in zurich. i don't mean like organic foody-haven stalls where stallholders speak a hundred languages and give away samples on wooden sticks and everybody sell tomatoes EVEN MORE EXPENSIVE than in coop.

i mean the type of honest to goodness CHEAP fruit and veg stalls where the sellers start drinking at ten a.m., speak one language that nobody else understands, and never wash their hands. but most importantly they sell their tomatoes CHEAPER THAN IN COOP.

in return i will let you know my amazing discovery. DVD rentals are expensive in Zurich. relative to like THE REST OF THE FREAKIN WORLD anyway. you can though join the library for ten francs a month and take all the DVDs (up to two at a time max) you want for free. so far i've watched approx 50 francs worth of dvds.

In Oerlikon, there is a market with meat, fish as well as vegetable (amongst other things) each Wednesday and Saturday morning from 7 to 11. Oerlikon is very easy to get to from Zurich HB and from the station, just head towards Swiss Hotel (you can see that building from the platform). Then you will find it.

I had Salmon that is fresh enough to prepare as sushi, tomato so sweet like I just pick them from my pot. Remember to bring a big shopping trolley!

so i went to oerlikon market and bought some lovely apple juice and some amazing sun dried tomatoe sauce: msntongue:

overall it was a bit expensive and not exactly the sort of market i was looking for but i guess i must raise my standards and price-range now i'm in zurich! i'll definitely be going back to oerlikon market anyway.

Depends on what type of vegetables you are looking for, there are Indian and Turkish shops on Josefstrasse that got good selection of meat, fish and vegetables as well but not as full a range as at the Oerlikon market.

I have been eating rather well since I arrived thanks to Swisspea introducing me to those shops as well as roaming around for markets and talking to others on forum about food. Of course, you have to get used to idea that you have to do shopping all over the place and not at one supermarket if you are on a budget. Viaduck is a good place to go for quality food, price is a bit more expensive but the quality of fish, meat and bread is on a par with Globus; of course I have to mention about the English Cheese, Beer and bagel. Those are good for a treat.

there is also a market in "viadukt". it's in the train bridge near hardbrücke. Here is link where you can find it, it's german, hope you can understand it.
