Help: Can I do a Biology BA instructed in English in Geneva or surrounding area??

Hi,

I already have a degree in East Asian studies/ Japanese but I plan to go back in a couple of years to get a degree + masters (and possibly PHD) in Biology (specifically bio-engineering). I see they have Masters programs for Bio-engineering in Lausanne that are in English. But I cannot find anything an undergraduate degree in Biology or some derivative of that that is done in English.

Does anyone know of any universities that offer a BA in Bio that is done in English? I am so bummed thinking I may not be able to do this degree if I move there... We will either be in Geneva or Lausanne or some area right around there.

Thanks!!

Thank you! And sorry about having to move my post .

Yeah, I looked at these sites the other day. Sadly it seems all the education for biology is only taught in English at a Masters level. It's so depressing.

No worries. There are very few UG programs in English ( EN is not an official language ), but many more at PG level.

Try the UK or Scandinavia perhaps ?

I'm taking up French at the moment, I just worry I won't be at a level to listen to lectures in Biology by the time I am there. So I was hoping for some kind of international college or something being they have so many international English speaking schools there for younger children.

It would probably be a BS or BSc you'd do

Uni requirements for language are pretty steep - min B2 certificate at CEF standards.

You should check out EPFL's School of Life Sciences - they offer a Master's in bioengineering but I think you do a BS on the way to it. A lot of the professors in that faculty teach in English. It's an intense engineering-oriented program so you'd probably have to do the preparatory year just to get in (catch up in math/physics/chem/bio so you don't fail the first year) - but that would be in French. You can check out the admissions requirements here: http://bachelor.epfl.ch/admission-requirements

Commonly in Switzerland there is a rule of thumb that says Bachelors aren't en english and Masters in English.
Your best shot is indeed the EPFL, some professors just don't speak the local language. It is VERY cutthroat however.

I am assuming you can do this at Webster University, but check their website or speak with them directly. http://www.webster.ch/ They have their US accredited college here with a wide array of disciplines for undergraduates. But of course it will not be cheap.

No, there's no biology. Equipping a lab is too expensive for a private University, IMHO.

The thread title worries me. A BA in biology does not exist. Biology is a science, so that'll get you a BSc, unless I'm missing something.

With a background in the Arts, I would have thought that even a Biology course in English could be a challenge. So for the EPFL, you'd definitely have to do the foundation year, before being accepted onto the standard 3 year course.

In the US, it is possible to get a BA in science. I have a BA in chemistry and biology from the University of Rochester. And the chemistry degree was fairly rigorous. Sometimes people get these degrees to go on to med school, grad school in psych, public health or like science but aren't sure they want to do only science.
