Giving to the needy.

I've recently done a major clean out and have quite a lot of stuff (clothing mainly) that i would like to give to the needy. Are there actually any "needy" people in Zurich? In New York Sydney, and other major cities, I could walk down the street and easily come across a homeless person to give anything from a warm blanket, hot meal, or old coat to (which is very sad)... but here... Hmmmmm... ???? Can anyone tell me where I should give to, where they actually need it? I don't want to wait until i get one of those bags for goodwill in the mailbox... i need to get rid of all this stuff now.

Re: Giving to the needy.

There should be large containers just outside of the major malls (maybe Glattzentrum ?) where you can deposit the clothing.
Perhaps your gemeinde will know where you can go.

You could donate your things to the Salvation Army for use or resale. I don't know where it would be in Zurich, but they have a Brockenhaus here in Bern where you can bring things. Look up "Heils Armée" in the phone book or whatever you use. That should give you the necessary information.

There were 3 major collection agencies that collected unwanted clothing in Switzerland but now only 2, Texaid and Solitex (Contex since Jan. 2011 was taken over by Texaid)

Re: Giving to the needy.

In Zurich, if you have items, especially kitchen and furniture, there's ArcheZurich:
http://www.archezuerich.ch or http://www.zuercher-brockenhaus.ch/. You will need to call and make an appointment for pick up.

For clothes, you can use Texaid and Solitex. I believe you receive complimentary texaid bags in the mail on a monthly basis and you can also drop off the clothes at the many recycling receptacles around the city.
