| | Gold necklace and pendant found lying on the sidewalk
Do I hand this over to the police? I'm not sure who to give it to. It definitely has some sentimental value to it due to the specifications of the pendant.

Definitely hand it into the police. If I lost something of value it's the first place I'd enquire.
EDIT: on a side note, when I read the tags I saw "Lost inbroad". | The following 3 users would like to thank mimi1981 for this useful post:

The Police for sure. They will take down your details, as it is customary for the finder to be reached and often rewarded.

I wouldn't bother, the person who lost it is unlikely to look for it and even if they do they are unlikely to have any way of proving that it's theirs. The police will keep it then sell it if no person looks for it.

Hand it in. If nothing else it will make you feel that you've done the right thing. If it means something to someone then they will surely try any avenue to get it back

I agree, police would be first place I'd try - another likely place would be to the geminde offices though, I did see some folks come to get things from the lost and found in the same building where I have to go for my permit.

Post a little notice close to where you found the necklace.
Do not disclose too much info. Just write: Necklace found, please call:
The owner will contact you.
Returning lost objects to their owners is a good deed.

The Gemeinde offices are just down the road from the police station here. I think I'll first go to the police tomorrow and see what they have to say |

The police are not interested. You take it to the Fundbüro (Office of lost property)

You'd probably notch up some great Karma if you got this back to the owner. | The following 4 users would like to thank Oldhand for this useful post:

Definitely police. It does catch up and you might get paid. Yeah, good Samaritan and stuff too but yeah, see point 2.
Two stories:
1. a friend of mine's house was robbed. One item was a unique gold necklace her grandmother had given her. The robbers were caught like six years later, and their loot was posted on the police cantonale vaudoises's website. She had filed a missing report at the time, and she was surfing the site (when she heard about the loot being online) and found her necklace. Got it back.
2. Another friend found a wallet in the street. Turned it into the police straight away. Got enough of a reward to go on vacation. Vacation.

When one finds something that seems to have a value of more than CHF 10, one is legally obliged to bring it to the Fundburo or Polizei. http://www.admin.ch/ch/d/sr/210/a720.html
When it is not picked up by the owner within a certain time (I think 3 months), the finder can go pick it up. When the finder does not pick it up within 12 months, it's for the Polizei/Fundburo to decide what to do with it.

After 1 year and one day, the finder can go to the justice of the peace and claim it.
