What not to forget to bring when moving from the UK?

Hi all, first post on this forum but have be reading it for weeks! Excellent banter and really good advice, so hope to be an active member going forward..

I am moving to Zug from the UK in a few weeks, and am generally ok for the big furniture items.

I'd love to konw what are all the little things you know I'll forget to bring, but will need when I get there... or what are the things that you know I'll really miss, so should stock up before I move!

Interested to get your thoughts and experiences!

I thought this thread might help a bit, somehow:

Relocating from the UK. What to buy in bulk in UK (make use of my shipping allowance)

and welcome to the forum.

Re: What not to forget to bring when moving from the UK?

Clothes (brand name) are generally very expensive here, so get the new summer collection before you come over.

Also bringing a 4 pack of Heinz baked beans will delay the shock of having to pay CHF 2.80 a tin here.

Teabags.

The ones here seem to be of the mini-variety.

Ah just remembered something. Paracetomol if you use it. It's so cheap in the UK.

Re: What not to forget to bring when moving from the UK?

if you have children buy their clothes before you come as they cost a fortune and the the quality / selection here is terrible.

cadbury's choc
tea bags
paxo stuffing
walkers crisps (say good buy to the packs of 6 as thats a very british thing)
medicine / tablets
nappies if relevant / formula milk (an absolute fortune here - 30 CHF)

Strangely I did the sums on this today, single pack of Rizla in the UK approx 20p (unless you buy them at London city airport Smiths 65p), you get 50 for 20p here you get 360 for 5Chuffs, so papers are roughly half the cost. But to be honest neglible overall in the bigger picture.

Paracetomol, I would definitely agree, but if you prefer Ibuprofen definitely buy that in the UK as it is not available over the counter here.

The other staples:

Marmite if you love it
Baking powder
Brown sugar (before anyone else mentions it)

Just a thought LondonIrish, if you said a little about yourself, people would be more able to help you in terms of things you might find useful to bring over from the UK!
And, from the post above - Paxo stuffing, I'm with you on that!

Re: What not to forget to bring when moving from the UK?

I second everyone who said Tea and Paracetamol/Ibuprofen. Any OTC drugs you like to use actually. It's not that you can't get drugs here, it is that paying 1 franc for 1 paracetamol tablet gets old after a while if you have a headache for a day or two.

And the tea here sucks. If you're not a big tea drinker no biggie, but if anyone comes to visit who is, make sure you have some on hand, if only to barter to a poor expat running out of stock.

Re: What not to forget to bring when moving from the UK?

Below are various items that are very hard, or impossible to find here. I have learned to live without a lot of them!

baking powder, cream of tartar, self raising flour (sealed in a tin), soft brown sugar, black treacle, golden treacle, blocks of fruit jellies, Cadbury's chocolate eggs, chocolate orange, ginger jam, lime marmalade,

crisps (anything except plain or paprika, we have those), marmite, bovril, powdered mustard, mushroom sauce, mint sauce, good tea bags, Paxo stuffing,

3 pint pie dish, 4 pint basin, birthday cards, pastry cutters, nappies (Expensive here)!

for the first few months & until you have rewired all your appliances, some UK multi strip power extension sockets (With about 2 foot of cable), maybe one for each room.
