Are the studies at Swiss Universities very hard?

Hello Guys,

I will be starting my Masters Course in Computer Science at Bern University and would like to know about the system in the Swiss universities. Is doing a Masters course at Bern University or Swiss Universities hard? I am a bit worried and would like to get some answers from you guys if anybody is studying in a Swiss university.

Thank you.

Hard relative to what? It kind of depends on your abilities, your intelligence, and your willingness to work, doesn't it? Inevitably, someone will find it too hard and someone will find it too easy.

For every credit point you have to earn, you need to put in 30 hours of work, plus studying for exams. So if hard means 'hard work', then yes. You also need full marks (as in 100%) to get the equivalent of an A, so unless you are a super student, your grades will look rubbish to people abroad.

I'm sorry to take advantage of your post, but I want to ask you a few questions. I'm an applicant to the Bern University M.Sc. chemistry program, and I applied just mid-way through last month. I was hoping to know, how long did it take you to hear back from them? I'm an international applicant with Canadian university qualifications (B.Sc.). I heard that admissions in swiss universities are largely concerned about how well the applicant's Bachelor's degree resembles that offered by Bern, before allowing transfer to Master's (i.e. compatibility more than how good your grades are).
If you don't mind me asking, where did you do your Bachelor's studies in? Also, do you have any idea how well the swiss schools look upon north american degrees?
I was wondering if they would be compliant and willing to disclose the status of application over phone/email. it did say that evaluation takes 4 to 8 weeks, and while it has been around 5 weeks since sending my app, I'm very eager to know before the answer arrives by post - I live in Asia, so that itself could be a while.
Once again, I'm really sorry to take advantage of your post without answering any of your questions, you just seemed like the perfect person to ask these questions from. Thanks!

I don't know exactly about Bern, but from the median of schools that I have attended in various countries (both student and teacher actually...), CS type courses tend to be too easy. Though it heavily depends on the Prof who is in charge of course.

The easy factor primarily comes in place when you actually love what you are studying and especially in CS one can learn a lot by just doing it, compared to say a law, psych or chemistry degree.

Thus to summarize, if you love to play with computers and don't mind digging around a bit, except for silly subjects like CSP you will likely not have much of an issue following the courses and completing them with success if you just have a good go at it.

Re: Are the studies at Swiss Universities very hard?

Hi All,

I was accepted into the WTI, University of Bern for a Masters in International Trade Law and i am already preparing for it!I have ordered the required literature and plan to read through it before i arrive in Bern in August.

I am not sure about other faculties but i was told the LLM is very intense and i should prepare to work super hard!

I guess its just about putting 100% into your studies!

Re: Are the studies at Swiss Universities very hard?

Hi, I just completed my Master studies at the University of Fribourg, and I can honestly say that I did not find the study plan that challenging.

However, I did struggle to understand the (dis)-organisation of the whole program (be prepared to find out every piece of information you might need to know all by yourself, which often includes visiting 3 different secretariats and hearing that you should have gone to the other two, and so on). make sure to ask all other students about exam dates, how to sign up, when to send in your papers etc and you will be fine...
