So explain to me why my husband never gets sick.. Never!
According to the website:
Quote:
Facts:
1. Healthy people with normal immune systems are highly susceptible to cold virus infection once the virus enters the nose. In volunteers studies, approximately 95% of normal adults became infected when virus was dropped into the nose (72, also see How Cold Virus Infection Occurs).
2. Of people who become infected, only 75% develop symptoms with a cold. (5, 72) The other 25% have virus growing in the nose but have no symptoms. They have an "asymptomatic infection".
3. Why people sometimes become infected but do not develop cold symptoms is a mystery. One clue is that in such instances the person may not be producing the normal amount of certain inflammatory mediators, the natural body chemicals which cause cold symptoms (2, also see What Causes Cold Symptoms). If this theory is correct, then people with active immune systems may be more prone to developing cold symptoms than people with less active immune systems!

Well done for missing the point completely. The idea is to raise awareness (poor people africa = barefoot) and not just raise money to give them shoes. The money raised will help in other ways.
It's actually not that clear (to me) It would seem that there is no money being raised at all. It is only to raise awareness.

Where do I send a TOMS donation? Can we do something another day if April 10th doesn’t work for us?
We are honored that you would like to donate money to help children in need! Because TOMS is a for-profit business (with a social mission) we are not able to accept donations. We encourage you to send the donation to an organization working to improve children’s health and education.
If you are interested in supporting TOMS Giving Partners’ larger health and education programs, please go to our blog at www.toms.com/blog/givingto see some of the organizations we work with. Please keep in mind funds will not be used to give shoes. TOMS covers the cost of giving new shoes to children in need. And thank you for your support!
It appears the only way to 'donate' to this cause is to buy their shoes:

With every pair purchased, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need. One for One.
I do agree it's a good cause, and I really like that they sometimes donate shoes locally produced in the area they are donated in, which I would hope is creating local jobs etc. But the whole "OneDayWithoutShoes" thing is in the end run by a profit making company. While they maybe do have a "social mission" someone is still making money and the "OneDayWithoutShoes"cause is also creating awareness of their company. Maybe I'm just a bit of a pessimist. At least they suggest donations to other organisations as well.

Buy yourself some shoes and some money will go to help them. What about give the total amount of the shoes price instead to buy the shoes?

I find this kind of donation very hypocritical and we have absolutely no way to find out if they did give the money and how much. And how much of it goes directly to the people?

Me too. They don't give any other options (except donate to another charity) and both websites are pretty ambiguous. It kind of looks to me like a big advertising stunt? If it wasn't for people spreading the word about this day without shoes, which doesn't seem to be doing much more than talk, I would never have heard of the profit making company behind it. I just hope the primary aim is actually helping people and not making a profit.

Re: Walk one day without shoes

Shoes are indeed one of many things lacking in Africa and they are something we often take for granted here (subject to your fashion woes, that is).

Are they the most pressing problem in Africa? Of course not. You'll see barefoot kids kicking around a homemade ball/sack and laughing. They can be incredibly positive despite the things lacking that we all enjoy each day.

But make no mistake that being barefoot does indeed cause numerous medical problems for Africans - severe fungal and bacterial infections and even amputation as a result. (source: best friend who is a physician and was just working in Africa this year)

Because he's a MAN.

I never get sick, either.
