Coop City (and SPAR) half blocked off on Sunday

This is just a question for those who may have seen this. I needed some bread today because mine had turned a bit green. Anyway, I went to the Coop City in Thun next to the Bahnhoff. I walked in and half of the store was blocked off by barricades. The front part that sold bread and other basic items was open and it was packed. I thought that maybe it was for cleaning. Right next to the barricade (on the other side) was the shelf with laundry detergent. I knew I was low so I just reached and grabbed the container. When I got to the register the lady told me (In Swiss German and I can now understand ) that it was not possible to buy on Sunday. She took it and put it behind the counter. Why is this a policy? We could debate for years about stores being closed on Sunday, but this place was open, so why limit what you can buy? It wouldn't have added hours, or made someone work extra. Funny thing was I stopped off at the SPAR petrol station on the way home to fill up and they have a large grocery store in the gas station. Same thing there. Only about 1/3 of that place was open and not blocked.

Re: Coop City (and SPAR) half blocked off on Sunday

Is this the first time you've tried shopping there on a Sunday? Just wondering if you've just never noticed it before.

Otherwise maybe it's because today was Palm Sunday and so they only offered limited service.

Maybe they blocked parts of the store because they'd need more staff if the whole place were open (to organize items, clean and whatnot)?

Re: Coop City (and SPAR) half blocked off on Sunday

I visited the local Volg last Sunday, and half of the shop was blocked off too.

I thought it could be so it could be managed by only the girl at the till, but I can't really say.

Still, muuuuch better than nothing

The Swiss have obviously not heard the saying:

"Cleanliness is next to Godliness."

Someone is trying to tell you that you should have been outside enjoying today instead of doing laundry

Re: Coop City (and SPAR) half blocked off on Sunday

Funnily, the first time I encountered this, was in Thun, about 2 years ago or so. Since then, I have noticed it in other places as well.

I once asked, and was told that only small shops with a limited selling surface are allowed to open on Sundays. To work around this, larger shops can partly block off the store, to reduce the surface. Additionally, they can only sell 'essential' carry-on goods which you might need to survive the Sunday, i.e. no detergent, large family packs, or crates with softdrinks/beer - those things (laundry, replenishing household stock) can wait until Monday

Re: Coop City (and SPAR) half blocked off on Sunday

If I do buy something on Sunday, it is almost always at Aperto in the Banhoff, but they didn't have the bread I wanted, so I went to Coop City. I would definitely buy the floor space issue, but it just seems a bit odd. If the doors are open and people are working, why can't I buy detergent? Coming from the US I find it very odd that I can buy a bottle of wine or a cold beer on a Sunday morning, but are barred from detergent.

When I was in the US it was the other way round. I went into a store on a Sunday and all parts of the store were open but only the alcoholic drinks section was shut off. I asked and they said it was some county law that they can't sell that on Sunday.

So I guess in Switzerland they don't want you to clean on a Sunday and in the US they don't want you to have fun.

I was also on a train on a Sunday and we were going through Mississippi and we went to the dining car and asked for a beer and the waiter said, there's a law that you're not allowed alcohol on a train in Mississippi on a Sunday so we had to wait until we crossed the state line into Louisiana.

It's odd but it's true.

Here's a link to the relevant law: Gesetz über Handel und Gewerbe (HGG)

Quote:
Art. 11

Folgende Geschäfte dürfen an öffentlichen Feiertagen von 06.00 bis 18.00 Uhr offen halten:
a) Bäckereien, Confiserien, Metzgereien, Milchhandlungen,
b) andere Lebensmittelgeschäfte mit einer maximalen Verkaufsfläche von 120 m2 [...]
Translation:

The following shops may open on public holidays from 06.00 to 18.00 o’clock:
a) bakeries, pastry shops, butchers, dairies
b) other grocery stores with a maximum sales area of 120 m2 [...]

Pretty interesting law. I wonder how they decide what part of the store to block off. I wonder if there are certain items that are allowed to be sold or if it's random. These are just interesting things that you discover.

*Strange Law Fact: In the state of Utah in the the US, you are not allowed to order any alcoholic beverage until the one you have is finished completely. If you have a sip of beer left and the waiter is at your table, you have to down it before you can ask for another one.

Re: Coop City (and SPAR) half blocked off on Sunday

I know that the big Coop Picadilly near Bellinzona is like that, closing off about 1/2 on Sundays (they just move stuff to the open side).

There, they close off the side away from the entrance/cashiers.

If it comes to a choice between wine and detergent on a Sunday I know which I would prefer.

Cheers,
