Fashion in Geneva?

I am moving to Geneva soon to work at the UN and have questions regarding womens' fashion. Can anyone let me know what is "in style" over there, or what is generally accepted?

Thanks

Re: Fashion in Geneva?

Geneva is more conservative than the other French-Swiss cities, probably because of the banks and UN agencies. You can spot them on weekdays, the pinstripe bankers and the bureaucrats in suits with ID badges and maybe a backpack.

What I noticed when I first arrived is that the casual clothes of middle-aged adults seem to be 'younger' to my American eyes. In the States, it's often khakis and polos on men and jeans and sweaters ('a jumper' in British and 'un pullover' in French) on women. Here, I see older men in hip-hugger jeans and Urban Outfitter-like tee shirts. The women's clothes seem to have more style and shiny/frilly things.

Of course, there are plenty of us Americans around international Geneva (30-40% foreigners) and I see American-looking people everywhere. Also, none of what I said above applies to the really old Geneva natives. At the market on Saturday mornings, there are many women in wool skirts and stockings pulling grocery carts.

Re: Fashion in Geneva?

Thank you for the information! I figured I would be going back to "business formal" at work but otherwise...I have not lived overseas in many years...
