Luton airport VAT refund

Hi all,

Just bought a load of new suits in the UK and have a few hundred VAT to claim back. I've noticed a VAT box at Luton airport, but no customs official to stamp the forms I have from M&S etc. do I just pop the forms in unstamped?

Cheers

Re: Luton airport VAT refund

I remembered the same boxes at the London airports. I indeed simply popped the forms into the box and received a reply several days (or a week or two) later.

There was no customs officer to stamp my things either, unlike at the Amsterdam Schiphol Airport where there are usually long queues of people waiting for their forms to be stamped.

Hope this helped. Maybe someone can verify this though?!

Re: Luton airport VAT refund

I had no problems with that at Heathrow airport. There were 2 clerks at the counter, did Stamps, checks and I could get cash refunds with Travelex

Just at the Primark-Oxford street I couldnt get any tax refund form, explanations didn`t change anything, talking to store manager, forms from other shops... no "You are not allowed to do that".

Well with other shops no probs, even far away London in Portsmouth Commercial Road...

Re: Luton airport VAT refund

You should have gone to a little back office just off the main hall (not far from Marks and Sparks) at Luton airport to get your stamp. I asked at the information desk for directions. Then you can leave your form there.

They never asked to see my goods so it may not matter.

Re: Luton airport VAT refund

Uesd one of those boxes at Birmingham Airport a while back. Somewhere it stated that the form would take up to 3 months to process and exactly 3 months later the refund appeared on my credit card.

Re: Luton airport VAT refund

Dear Country Mouse

The blue VAT refunds boxes at London Luton Airport are emptied daily by HMRC staff and the contents taken away for processing.

The office referred to in an earlier post by Crofty isn't always manned, but the boxes are always available.

Airport staff have no access to the boxes.

Kind regards
Louise Ross

Re: Luton airport VAT refund

Hi Country Mouse

No problem, the HMRC staff can't be present all the time, so the box arrangement is in place. Has been for as long as I can remember.

Thanks for choosing London Luton and we hope to see you again.

Regards
Louise

Re: Luton airport VAT refund

I believe (some?) airports, such as Heathrow, don't actually sell things VAT free. They still have VAT, it's just some dodgy deal where they sell stuff a bit cheaper than the high street.

So, if one bought something at an airport, as it still has VAT on it, can that actually be claimed back? I'm talking airside, but I'm pretty sure last time I bought something from Dixons at LHR it still had UK VAT on it.

Hi Itzoe

I'm not entirely sure how the process works once HMRC has the forms or whether receipts are given back. Sorry.

Re: Luton airport VAT refund

Surely if you claim VAT back in the UK, you then need to declare stuff when you arrive here to pay CH VAT- do you what s the process?

We often claim VAT back on big items bought in France and then pay VAT here- but hos does it work at the airport?

Re: Luton airport VAT refund

Hi AdrianLondon

All purchases will have duty on them but if you are visiting the UK from another country you may be entitled to a refund of the VAT on goods you buy from shops that offer Tax Free Shopping (also known as the Retail Export Scheme).

Tax Free Shopping allows travellers leaving the European Union (EU) to get a VAT refund on goods they buy here and take home. More info can be found here...
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/vat/sectors/c...s-visitors.htm

Similarly, those travelling to destinations outside the EU will get slightly lower prices on some items in the airside shops.

Nothing dodgy at all I can assure you.

Happy travels.

Louise

Re: Luton airport VAT refund

Hi Louise and thank for your help. May I digress a bit here - we always travel via Luton, but the one thing that infuriates me every time is having to pay for the shuttle to the railway station! Surely this should be a free service. thanks (and sorry for diversion)

Re: Luton airport VAT refund

Hey Odile

Don't apologise for digressing, happy to help and answer any questions.

The bus to/from the rail station is actually operated by the train company - First Capital Connect - and the shuttle fee forms part of the cost of the train ticket for the whole journey.

Regards
Louise

Cheeky beggars - they have always charged us - even though it is clear we are going to buy a train ticket, or had arrived by train?

Hi,

if you buy a train ticket to 'Luton Airport', the shuttle bus is included.

If you just buy it to Luton Town or Luton Airport Parkway, you have to pay for the extra 'stop' to get you to the airport.

Hi all,

Not heard anything from the HMRC yet, but it could take 3 months they said.

Next problem. I've again been shopping in UK this weekend, but this time in smaller shops such as Fat Face etc. I have the standard till receipts, but no VAT form. Last month I was given full TAX forms from M&S and Debenhams.

What do I do now, just pop the till receipts in the box with a cover note with address and bank details? Or can I get a form from somewhere?

Cheers

Re: Luton airport VAT refund

No VAT form (or at least, no commitment from the shop to honour an export stamped invoice), no tax refund.

It's the shop which actually refunds the tax (or cuts a deal with eg Global Blue to do it), and they don't have to.
