Any good computer component shops here?

I'm looking at upgrading a few components on my PC, and would like to go to an actual shop. I've bought online in the past, but have also been bitten once and had to pay to RMA an item (the shipping, not the replacement).

Anyhow, I would rather deal with a person in this matter, even if I have to pay a little more.

So, are there good stores? Preferably between Bern(Stadt) and Burgdorf, or in Fribourg.

Chur all.

Re: Any good computer component shops here?

Bump. Nothing?

How about good sources for online shopping? IOW, somewhere that won't give me grief if I have to return an item.

Any info will help, cheers.

Steg Electronics in Zollikofen are VERY good, they will also upgrade or repair: then you will have a guarentee. It is possible to slow a computer down with the wrong upgrade.

I've never been to Steg at Zollikoen but I've been to their shop in Basel and was always happy with the experience. They never have tried to "up sell" and on occasion have advised me to select a cheaper product that did the job better or just as good on my computer. Keep in mind too that "a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link" and you should do fine.

My best advice is to build the computer youself, or have a pro do it for you. Why? Because the built ones have all sorts of rubbish software installed on the hard drive that slows it down. I don't honestly know if this applies to all ready made PC's though. Unfortunately I can not provide you with any names as my I.T guy only works for companies or close friends.

Good Luck!

Thanks for your concern Sbrinz! I know the risks and have been doing this stuff for the last 17 or 18 years.

I did find that actual Steg shop on Toppreise, and was considering going there, but for the parts I want they are more expensive (e.g. CHF280 for a graphics card that elsewhere costs CHF 250) so I wanted to be sure that if I do go there the service will account for the cost of the items.

Re: Any good computer component shops here?

digitec.ch
I have used their online shop many times and found the service very good. I once received a faulty item, stuck it back in the box with a hand written note ( in English ) and posted it back. A few days later I received the replacement. No questions and no communications. I thought that was excellent.
Actually it's the only place I buy my electronics as I prefer not to go to shops and I like the to my door delivery.

Re: Any good computer component shops here?

Just go for Digitec, they typically have good service and low prices, though check on toppreise just in case.

If you are looking for real 'components' though, Conrad (http://www.conrad.ch) and their physical shops, eg the one in Dietlikon, is the place to be. They are pricy but they have nearly everything.

Re: Any good computer component shops here?

Thanks for the feedback all. I think a combo of Digitec and Steg should cover what I need. Moderately souped up computer, here I come!

Re: Any good computer component shops here?

I tend to stick with Steg.

They're prices are a bit higher, but I have a store not 5 minutes away from where I live - the saving in delivery normally makes their prices competitive if not cheaper anyway.

I've had several bad experiences from various online retailers, Digitec, Microspot and one other that I can't remember (I think internet.ch)- all revolving around them having an item listed as in stock on their website, yet it actually being out of stock.

You then have to natter and nag at them to get a refund (which takes about two weeks) and cancel the order, even if they want to deliver it to you months and months later.

I recently had this issue with Digitec (but then no one in .ch had the items in stock) and after a couple of weeks cancelled via the website and they refunded within 2 days, pretty good going. I often seem to be getting stuff nobody else buys, doesn't help ( bequiet! case fans, xeon E3-1235s, etc).

Re: Any good computer component shops here?

Digitec (and Steg and others) don't charge delivery. Toppreise quotes the price including delivery. I only ever order if the item is in stock - though I appreciate others have had difficulty even there.

Re: Any good computer component shops here?

Just thought I'd add my own experiences - thought that STEG was v good. The website was useful in that it showed what stock there was in each of their stores. I needed a case immediately - so could v simply get a list online of everything they had in stock and check what was available in the shop near Zurich.
They seemed to have a good range of stuff in stock - useful as I've just finished building a dedicated gaming machine.

I also found digitec frustrating - as per the above posts. Tried to order a case from there first of all - it gave an estimated delivery date about a week away. After 2 or 3 days they changed the order to show 'no delivery date'. After phoning up I found that they expected it in "3 to 4 weeks" and told me that I couldn't cancel! Fortunately in this case I had planned to collect it from their Zurich premises and pay cash on collection, so it wasn't an issue to explain that I would definitely not be buying the case from them even if they went ahead with the order!!
