Cheap printer in Aldi - Canon MX410

This week, Aldi is selling the Canon Pixma MX410 printer for 69Fr.

http://www.aldi-suisse.ch/ch/html/of...1_DEU_HTML.htm

I bought one today. It set up easily enough (but you do need to install the drivers and software). It's a printer, scanner/copier and fax machine. Plus it has wireless networking so you can place it anywhere and print remotely. Comes with a 3 year guarantee.

Print quality seems fine, although I've not printed anything fancy such as photos.

The canon pixma printers are good value, even on pictures so long as you use the high quality mode. They are also good on ink and fully recommend digitec who seem to have the best value packs on cartridges especially if you get the colours all together instead of indivdiually

With this printer you've got no choice - it only has a single colour cartridge, which means when one colour runs out you need to replace the colour ink tank regardless of how much of the other colours are left.

Could turn out to be expensive to run, especially if you're printing photos. On the other hand if you just want a cheap all in one for occasional text output, it'll probably be fine.

Will admit I didn't check that as the pixma's I have had all have individual cartridges - good pickup slaphead. The colour cartridge for all 3 colours combined is 22CHF

Re: Cheap printer in Aldi - Canon MX410

This is a great deal for anyone who only doesn't do a lot of printing. Speed and print quality is more than adequate for home office use.

The cartridges are quite expensive though, so the cost per page printed is high - this is where the manufacturer makes money.

I wouldn't recommend this model for heavy printing, but for anyone who only needs to print less than 50 pages a month, this is a steal.

And as Slaphead already pointed out - it's not really made for printing photos, otherwise you'll be buying ink very often.
For this you really need a printer with large volume, separate inks.

if cartridge costs are important then look at the epson range - 6 individual cartridges and a pack of 36 was £20 on fleabay

Yeah, but given my experience of Epson you'll end up dumping most of that ink having to repeatedly clean the heads every time you want to print. Every Epson I've ever used developed regular head blockages. Never once had a blockage with Canon though, even after being left idle for a couple of months.

This is because Epson print heads are integrated with the printer and are not part of a cartridge as is the case with Canon or HP.

Ink is cheap, but the printer requires costly (or carefuly diy) maintenance - the print heads will clog up sooner or later anyway.
There is no perfect solution.

Ink is cheap, but the printer requires costly maintenance - the firmware counts the number of pages printed and will refuse to print once the limit is hit. There are ways around this, but the print heads will clog up sooner or later anyway.

i have a PX720 for a few years, run through nearly 5000 pages and never had any issues, its been flawless, even when left for 6 months.

if i get a reset message ill reset it, its not a big deal. I can buy a new printer with the savings on cartridges alone.

Don't have that particular model, I believe we have the MX610, but in any case the scanner part is excellent (in fact always had good results with a canon scanner).

Re: Cheap printer in Aldi - Canon MX410

I have access to a printer/scanner/copier at work; I bought this one just for the odd time I need to print a boarding pass, instructions/map, SBB cheap online ticket etc.

The fact that it's wireless means I can hide it somewhere and just hit the power button when I need to print something. It can even be turned off remotely - which is kind of cool to see, but not exactly a useful feature

As has been pointed out, this isn't a great photo printer. Iit only has one (combined) colour cartridge - photo printers either have a row of separate colours or, in the case of my HP in London, two colour cartridges for 6 colours (3 each).

Re: Cheap printer in Aldi - Canon MX410

Thanks for post, Adrian.

I just picked one up.

Our scanner is rubbish and only works with Windows XP and I can't get a newer driver.

Also, although we have a Laser printer, a colour printer is really useful now and again.

Cheers!

There's your answer Biff - don't buy - just install Adrian's

And Adrian - there's your answer to the remote on and off button - so Biff can turn it on and off when she needs it. Now just set up a drainpipe postal tube between your balconies she need not even go upstairs to pick up her printing.

Cake anyone?

Re: Cheap printer in Aldi - Canon MX410

Remote OFF button. Not possible to turn it ON remotely, as that would imply the machine is already ON to accept the remote signal.

And yes, she already uses my wireless network, but I guess she would prefer her own printer for scanning/copying without me having to be in.

However, thanks for the offer of cake, ecb. When are you bringing it over?

I would bring it over if you were in ... but it may be on a Biff printing day, in which case it appears you would be out (or in another dimension with your vacuum cleaner ..)
