Is VAT / tax / fees charged for personal belongings moved within Europe?

Hi everyone:

I will be moving to Belgium over summer.

Does anyone know whether my belongings might be taxed when they enter the country? If so, would there be any way to avoid this?

I just received some birthday gifts through Swiss Post, but my friends didn't mark them as "gifts." So I was charged tax on them. I was told that any goods transported across borders are taxed if they exceed a certain value. This made me worried about my move.

I'd be grateful for any information. Thanks.

I've moved furniture etc to the UK and to Germany from Switzerland on different occasions and there was no tax to pay. So I'm guessing Belgium would be the same (EU). Why not ask a removal firm, they should know.

Thanks Nixi. I have asked a couple of removal companies, but their answers have been non-committal--"it depends." No one really seems to know.

Personal goods that are used (at least 6 months old) could be imported when you first arrive in CH free of any tax.

New items cannot be imported tax free above 300 chf per day if brought in person.

The value of used personal items will be a small fraction of original cost...

Re: Is VAT / tax / fees charged for personal belongings moved within Europe?

If you are talking about 'Personal Effects' which you have owned then I don't think there should be any duty to be paid even hough you are heading over into the EU as it would have been paid at the point of purchase originally (though I am sure others will correct). I would ask for a detailed quote from any removal firm which breaks down under what headings you are being charged. Watch out for 'Documentation' and Insurance as this can sometimes be slipped in twice by disreputable firms under other names.
