Re: How hard is my tap water? Answer inside.

Boss lady is going crazy that the water is super hard (apparently she's very sensitive to taste - I certainly am not) - only moved here a couple of weeks ago - apparently we have fernwaerme hot water which is , again apparently very cheap.

In such a case what options are available or reasonable in respect of water softeners ??

Thx.

Is it the taste that bothers her? Get a Brita filter.

You can have a water softener installed, but that's only an option if you own the place.

Yup bought the gaffe - but does a water softener in a fernwaerme situation make sense at all since there is no boiler to speak of?

I don't think you can put hot water through a water softener. Not the salt type.

And you've bought the house.

Hmn... any chance of changing to a different... um... er....

never mind.

Quick google, no idea if it's a solution or just humbug. So don't shoot the messenger.

And won't remove any of the minerais that may be what she's able to taste. Brita or equivalent is the only way to do that.

with old buildings and old water pipes there have been reports of dangerous bacteria being bred and transmitted. Advised to run your water first for a minute or so before drinking

Can collect the rain water off the roof.
That should be soft enough.

I just read that a lot of calcium in the water can lead to depression. There is a LOT of calcium in the water here.

Re: How hard is my tap water? Answer inside.

Is it normal that water is brownish sometimes when we open the tap in full? It has happened a couple of times and we are really wondering if the quality of the water in Zürich is that bad.

We just move to our apartment, that is a temporal one, and we know that sometimes when the tap water hasn't been used for a while could be a little bit brown in the beginning, but has happened to us also a couple of times after that and after been using tap water a lot.

No, it's not normal, and nothing to do with hardness or general quality of the water supply, but everything to do with your building's plumbing system. Complain to your landlord, or else just live with it by running the taps til it goes clear, until you find somewhere more permanent to stay.

A Brita-type water filter may help if it continues even after running the tap for a while, but really the building management should be made aware and take remedial action.

We often get this if they have been working on the public supply, actually.

Same if they work on the building supply.

Re: How hard is my tap water? Answer inside.

It may be old plumbing on the property. It probably cleans out rust especially in the morning. It's a good idea to let it flow 30 seconds to 1 minute after you haven't used it for a while (e.g. in the morning). Happens in old buildings... Sometimes you just taste metal even if the colour is still not visible.
Still I would let the owner know, maybe they are aware and can confirm.
