How hard is my tap water? Answer inside.

Several appliances (dishwasher, washing machine, coffee machine, etc) require that one knows the water hardness.

You may find it out if you enter your postal code in this website:
wasserqualitaet.ch

For conversion between French degrees and other units
1 °fH is:
0.56 dGH or °dH
0.702 °e or °Clark
0.1 mmol/L
10 ppm or mg/L CaCO3

Re: How hard is my tap water? Answer inside.

Has anyone noticed an increase in water hardness in Zurich? I am descaling my kettle every few weeks when it used to be a couple of times a year, this is only since March I've noticed this.

Re: How hard is my tap water? Answer inside.

The website might be useful to many, but doesn't solve all your enquiries. The major interest for me is the name and address of the water supplier.

My small town of 7'000 people is supplied by 3 different water sources, and will therefore have 3 different qualities, depending upon which part of the town you live in.

My advice is to contact the water supplier and they will give you the exact information about the water supply to your house.

Lucky you, mine need's doing every 3-4 weeks and that's using filtered water from a Brita jug. And that's only boiling it once a day for the OH's cup of tea in the morning!

Sbrinz, doesn't your commune/gemeinde put the details of water quality/hardness on their website? Mine does as well as publishing it in our monthly newsletter.

I have a brita filter which I use for the kettle etc. I change the filter only when the kettle starts furring up, not every 15 seconds like they recommend. The filter lasts around 6-9 months.

Interestingly, it appears that your commune/Gemeinde has 'improved' the quality of your water, by a semantic trick.
It concerns the categorisation of water with a hardness rating of between 15 and 25 °fH. In Misery-Courtion, this is 'moyennement douce' (moderately soft).
However, according to this http://www.svgw.ch/iep13 from SSIGE (La Société Suisse de l'Industrie du Gaz et des Eaux) , water of this quality is described as 'moyennement dure' (moderately hard). All the other classifications are the same.

Good idea, yes they do and they say Zurich should be soft, this calls for further investigation. Descaling every couple of weeks (and needing it again today) is not soft water

"Dank des hohen Anteils an Seewasser ist das Zürcher Trinkwasser eher weich (14°-19°fH) oder (7°-10°dH)."

Re: How hard is my tap water? Answer inside.

I learned from our sanitaire that it depends on the time of year in our village. In summer more of the water comes from the lake Geneva. In winter the water comes more from the mountain. that explains the difference in hardness.

he also told me that for that reason it is very difficult to calibrate the water softener which we decided not to install.

As said local info

No, according to the Misery-Courtion website it's duré (32-42) which is hard me.anon. Not moderately hard, hard.

(manual quote. I still can't reliably use the automatic quote )

That's hard. I was referring to the different interpretations of the 'hardness' classification (see Attachment).
Anyway, if you have to endure between 32 and 42 °fH, you have my full sympathy (whatever that is worth to you. It looks like a gift of soap powder would be more practical. ).
Looking more closely at the link you supplied, I realise now that the bold text in the table (32-42) refers specifically to your area.

Indeed... and much much cheaper than Durgol, etc. 1 litre of alcohol vinegar from the French supermarket is about 35 cts. I use it on all stainless steel surfaces, glass, tiles, bath, sink and taps, and regularly sprinkle a all over inside of dishwasher and filter, and washing machine, etc. Every few weeks I pour some in the kettle when hot and leave it for a couple of hours and rinse. Magic!

Just had a new Italian style shower-room installed, and the seller at SABAG told us to only use vinegar on the big glass partition, and none of the expensive products sold here.
