Build Pan/Tilt Remote Head - Free time

I and my other friends shoot video during our free time, to get some nice clips we always wanted to shoot with a Crane. But for us it is really expensive to buy one, so we decided to build one.

I am planning to build a pan/tilt remote head while my other colleague does the crane. I am looking for some mechanical design help.

something like this

Thanks

Do you have good knowledge of servo sytems? What seems simple is as an amateur, can be very difficult to achieve.

Maybe you can use some modules from Conrad http://www.conrad.ch/ce/de/category/...bau-Elektronik

or Distrelec https://www.distrelec.ch/elektronik-&-automation;jsessionid=D31A253A541B5DFA576F9C678939 1242.daechj013u

You might find it easier to buy a remote TV camera system, and just change the camera?

Re: Build Pan/Tilt Remote Head - Free time

I am not a expert with the motor system but have some basic knowledge, I could program to control the motors. I need help more on mechanical stuff like choosing and placing right components like bearing, shaft, timing belt ..etc.

This helecopter with built in camera might be suitable,

A special offer, instead of SFr 229,90 it is now only CHF 89,95

Out of interest, what are you building the crane out of? Would your friend know how to source and build a frame to hold a projector for a project I'm working on? Would they be interested in taking on a commision?

Re: Build Pan/Tilt Remote Head - Free time

You could try some of the robotic spares type web-shops for stepper motors, driver boards and gears etc.

I used to have a friendly sheet metal fabrication plant near me in the U.K. who would cut bits of metal to size for a few quid.

The other thing I've done in the past is to make gearbox casings out of bent sheet steel and used Meccano gears and axles as these are quite heavy duty.
But the metal work fabrication involves access to a workshop and the correct tools and pressures as you need accuracy when working with gears.

This is going to sound quite odd, but watch the special features of Bad Taste - it has an interview with a painfully young Peter Jackson explaining (among other things) how he built a crane out of household junk.

Re: Build Pan/Tilt Remote Head - Free time

ebay or Ricardo?

Unless you want to build one for fun, you'll end up spending all your time trying to get it right instead of filming (which I guess is the bit you are more interested in).

By the time you have bought all the components, spend time making the thing, and rental for any space and/or equipment (which I have found is usually cheaper to buy rather than hire!) you'll be out of pocket.

Another thought: are there any metal-work schools around where you are? Could you see if one of the students can help and/or do something like that for a project? You could then buy it off him/her once done.

If you are looking for a DIY setup on the cheap you should check out this guy's builds.

I know you mentioned a motorized head but If anything you can get some ideas from his builds for a prototype.

you can also simulate a crane type motion with a monopod. I'm not sure if you have ever tried but in some short movement shots it looks pretty good. Similar idea with a tripod (only using two of the legs and moving the camera forward or backward while you tilt.)

Re: Build Pan/Tilt Remote Head - Free time

My friend already had a functioning prototype of the JIB where the camera movement is limited, that's why I wanted to do the motorized head.
