Being an oldie I can be very slow on the uptake and this thread has got me worried. I'm out of my depth with most of today's high-tech things anyway. But, and this is what worries me: I have asked for a Kindle for my birthday. I first saw it in England where my niece eagerly explained all about it. Now, if I have rightly understood from the above, I won't be able to buy here the whole range of books offered in England as I only have a Swiss debit card account - is that right?
Well Im an oldie aswell thats why Ive bought the kindle secondhand as Im a bit frightened that Im not going to be able to work it out,
Everybody just keeps saying its simple (so this idiot has had it for a week and havent managed to register it yet)
Will keep you informed....

Did you live in England when you opened the account?
If you install expat shield onto your PC / laptop and connect it, it will give you a UK IP address then you can register and open your Amazon .co.uk account no problem, it also works for watching sky tv etc while abroad

Re: kindle, amazon uk?possible

I'm 75 and have found my way around the Kindle, the iphone and a vpn link for buying from the UK.
If peanut-brain here can do it, anyone can.
I did get help with the vpn from a fantastic young chap on EF and for that I'm grateful both to him and the English Forum.
Using the Kindle is an absolute doddle but I'm glad I have the UK account and yet am able to use my Swiss credit card.

Had to google it myself.
I still don't understand why Kindle would make it hard for users to register their device on whatever Amazon website they please. Why so many hurdles? Haven't they heard of global village?

So, this other peanut brain, is, as far as I can see, and regarding my question, right. That is even with a vpn link (whatever that may be) I can't use my Swiss debit card because I don't have a UK account. ?????????????????????? Which means apparently that I can't choose from the full range of books available.???????????????

Re: kindle, amazon uk?possible

I'm pretty sure, as Chappers says, that with a vpn (virtual private network) account you should be able to set up a UK account with Amazon, with which you should be able to use your Swiss credit card.
I've had my Amazon account for so many years that I can no longer remember the set-up details, and the rules may well have changed.
I do though use a Swiss credit card with a UK Amazon account, because I'm resident in Switzerland and that's the only credit card I have.
I wanted the vpn link for the bbc iplayer and downloading films. So far it works very well.

I've had a UK account for years and it has always been on a Swiss credit card and address....

I buy kindle stuff on .co.uk, com, de and even fr on one occasion and I've never had a problem...
So you've been able to buy kindle books from .com, .co.uk and .de? I've tried that but it says that the kindle is registered to only one store. (So even if I purchase the file on .de for example, I can't read it on my kindle, which is registered to .com.) Are you doing something special to make it work?

Once your kindle is registered it doesnt matter where in the world you are it buys from the domain youre registered at. Mine is registered on .co.uk so when I visit the `store`it automatically goes to .co.uk and downloads from there, and payment is then automatic through my account direct to my registered debit card.

exactly, that's the problem. I want to buy from other domains as well, not just the one I'm registered with. The other poster said he had bought from multiple sites:

Well dont know about anyone else but Im just getting more and more confused
So If Ive understood right :- First need someone that explains to me what a VPN is and what I should do with it (no rude comments PLEASE)
Then I can only set up the kindle with a UK account (am I right till now??)
and if some nice young chap explains it to me and I dont understand then I must be a right bloody idiot cos even over 80s understand it
So after that I will pretend Ive never owned a kindle and wouldnt have a one even if I got it as a present

Re: kindle, amazon uk?possible

Before anyone can help, you need to have set up a vpn account which is easy. Even I managed to do that.
If you Google 'vpn' several sites will come up and some of them have phone numbers.
Maybe if you ring a vpn provider they will be able to help you.
I had specific connection problems which the young EF chap helped me with, but he lives in Lausanne.
Good luck.
