No I can see the Kindle going the same way as the digital camera (that everyone told me was so easy)Its in a drawer (somewhere never to be seen again)
I love my kindle. I really recommend taking the time to go through the process as you'll love the reward (presuming you're an avid reader).

Just try creating the amazon.co.uk account first. At the very top of the screen, there's a link that says 'New Customer? Start Here'. When you click on "Start here" you need to supply your email address and select the radio button that indicates you are a new customer and don't (yet) have a password. On the next screen, you'll need to provide your full name (real name), confirm your email address, and provide a password for the account.

Once you get through all that, you should then have an amazon.co.uk account. I dont think you need to put any credit card info in until you actually try to purchase something.

From there, you can try registering your kindle via this page. Click the 3rd link down labeled 'Register a Kindle':

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/cust...deId=200487840

I cant see the individual steps as mine is already registered to .com, but you just need to follow the steps on the screen from there.

Hope this help. Kindle is awesome and I'm sure you'll love it once you get started.

Re: kindle, amazon uk?possible

Birthday behind me, no Kindle, apparently the change of plan occured at the last minute, so I'm not in dire straits at the moment.

But I'm now going to ask a silly question, one which for me is quite straightforward but due to the many new words and meanings in the modern English vocabulary ('Gay' at one time meant being happy, now you can't use the word anymore). My problem is with the word ACCOUNT.

I belong to a couple of on-line groups where I have 'an account' - that is I've signed in to be able to take part but these 'accounts' have nothing to do with money.

Presumably needing a UK account for a Kindle means a money/bank acount.???

No, you can register an account, but obviously you won't be able to buy anything without adding a card to it. See Circe's post above for the amazon.co.uk help page.

Congrats and happy reading! I also suggest signing up for the Kindle Daily Deal, which will send an offer for a different book, each day, at a drastically reduced price. They offer a very wide variety so not everything will appeal to you, but I find it fun to see whats on offer for 2-3 bucks

Well, mostly what I see free are the classics or works by little known authors that are publishing shorts. In addition to the Kindle Daily Deal I mentioned above, there are other websites that list books that are temporarily free or heavily reduced. For example: http://www.pixelofink.com/

You might also be interested to know that you can get magazines for the Kindle as well. You definitely have to pay for those, but for example, I pay $3 a month for Time magazine. That's less than $1 an issue. On weekends I travel to various places in CH, and I tend to catch up on magazines while sitting in a nice comfy SBB train.

Happy reading!

There are a ton of free or low-cost e-books you can download for your Kindle. If you go to the Kindle books section of Amazon, there's a list of the best-selling paid e-books and free e-books on-line. You can click on a subcategory if you are interested in particular types of books (like romances or mysteries). Also, if for some reason you can't get an Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk account because you live in Switzerland, there are similar lists for English-language e-books on the German, French, and Italian Amazon web sites:

American Amazon Free Kindle e-books

British Amazon Free Kindle e-books

German Amazon Free Kindle E-books in English

French Amazon Free Kindle E-books in English

Italian Amazon Kindle Books in English*

*Regrettably, the Italian Amazon does not have a list of all the free English-language e-books available like the other sites. However, it is possible to sort the e-book list by price and if you select in the "Ordina per" menu in the upper right the option "Prezzo: crescente" you should be able to find all the cheap and free e-books that you want.

Finally, I don't know if this option is availble for you, but I've managed to find plenty of e-book bargains through this site. The links go to the American Amazon, I should warn you though:

Pixel of Ink: Free and Bargain Kindle E-books

P.S. Circe, forgive me---I didn't notice you also left a link for Pixel of Ink!
