Re: Buying a camera....Where???

If prices are similar then out of Digitec, Manor and Interdiscount which would be best to buy a dslr from? The lady at Interdiscount said that for CHF50 extra I could get 3 year guarantee instead of the normal 1 year. Do digitec and Manor have something similar to extend the guarantee? Are these extended guarantees even useful when it comes to actually getting repair work done?

If Migros have the camera which you wanted, then don't hesistate to buy it from them.

Its warranty policy is hard to beat.

You can stop right there. Manor, Interdiscount, Migros, etc are all about 20% higher than the Digitec prices. Migros do have a standard 2-year guarantee on all electronics. In the past Migros hasn't dropped the price on their digicams until they've been on the market 18-24 months.

Don't even think about the specialist camera places. They're another 10-20% above Manor & Co.

Digitec always unless PhotoGanz can price match.

I agree with this. I made the mistake of buying mine spontaneously at Fotopro.
Only later did I realize that I had paid Fr.50 more than the average price.
Instead they gave you a free photography course (so-so, advertising) and a chip-card for printing ca.50 photos at their printing automat.

Question:
I am giving away my old compact digital camera and planning to purchase a larger digital one.
I am looking for one that has a:
1) Better focus than a compact camera.
2) Produces very sharp, high-quality/-resolution photos.
3) It is not a professional/specialist camera, but the photos are almost as good or as good as a professional/specialist one.
4) Not as heavy or as bulky as a professional/specialist camera.
5) Not too complicated to use, like any compact one.
6) Budget: Fr.1-Fr.3000

Open for any recommendations (esp. by specialists)!
Thanks in advance!

Also check out Eschenmoser in Zürich, they have knowledgeable staff and I believe they do price-matching.

Re: Buying a camera....Where???

hi hkang,
In reply to your question...
3000CHF is a large budget and you could get a fine camera. However if you are new to the game, I would recommend buying an entry level camera and using your extra cash to buy accessories or lenses to broaden your photography options, eg you will need a tripod, possibly an off-camera flash and reflectors for potrait photography, macro lense for close-ups, possibly water housing??

If you wish to have a dSLR and 'city camera' I would recommend Olympus E-410. Last year, I bought an E-410 that included 2 lenses for approx 350euro/500CHF. This is the smallestdSLR that I know of and therefore is great for carrying around cities or traveling with. It's very easy to use and meets all the requirements that you desire. I am sure this would suit you for 2-3 years during which time you will develop skills and knowledge and decide to upgrade. Otherwise the Olympus E-620 has more options, but is slightly bigger/in the 'normal size' range. What is good about a brand is that if you started with E-410, you can upgrade later to another Olympus model and keep your existing lenses!
I recommend looking in any shop to get a feel of the camera in your hands. Saturn is a shop worth trying for good prices if there is one near you. Also, buy and read 'Understanding Exposure' by Bryan Peterson.
