Buying a camera....Where???

I am looking to buy a digital photo camera in the zurich area.
I would like to know if anyone can suggest a store?
I shouldn't be too expensive, but just the right price for what is offered.
Can anyone suggest a good shop?
xxx Jana

Re: Bying a camera....Where???

Interdiscount XXL just of Bahnhofstrasse (near Coop City) has a good selection and good prices and also the electrical section at Manor sometimes has good offers. A friend bought a compact 6 mega pixel Samsung with zoom etc. from Interdiscount http://www.digicamreview.com/2007/01...announced.html
For 149chf which seemed good value.

Re: Bying a camera....Where???

Personally, I strongly reccomend Manor. They have all price ranges and are the only ones I found so far which offer a 2 year warranty.
Also, they are very professional and recently our camera broke for the second time and they reimbursed us the money of purchase as it was clearly defective.

Will always buy there...
But... do not buy Nikon as it seems they have issues (experience made with 2 Nikon camera and lens always broken)

Cheers,
Cristina

Re: Bying a camera....Where???

Find a shopping centre with a few of the shops mentioned above, and have a leisurely cruise around, there are usually different cameras on different offers in different stores, so just pick the one you like.

Re: Bying a camera....Where???

check those 2 shops for very good prices:

http://www.digitec.ch/ (Westpark Nord, Pfingstweidstrasse 60
8005 Zürich
or
http://www.stegcomputer.ch/shop.asp (they have a filialen in Dietikon)

I bought my camera in stegcomputer and it is was about 100 CH cheaper then Migros/manor and so on!

Re: Bying a camera....Where???

If you want to see probably the largest range of cameras I'd say Media Markt in Dietlikon. Sihl City's store is also good, but less range.

Of course prices there are higher than internet shops like digitec....

I agree with Gooner. Still pays to check all prices via toppreise.ch (with cameras digitec has steeper prices). I have ordered from both of those stores and after one item claimed as in stock by Architronic took 8 weeks to deliver, I have been ordering most my things from digitec. If they say they have it on stock, they do, they have a real-time updating mechanism. Also be sure to look at the price including shipping. If the difference is only up to 10 CHF between an unknown store and digitec, I will go with digitec. What is also cool is that you can chose to pick up the item at their store (be sure to print out their invoise - scanning the bar code at the store gets you in line).

Of course checking out the cameras at a store like Mediamarkt is helpful. Best online resource for camera reviews is http://dpreview.com/ another good resource is www.photo.net

Cheers

Digitec are also personal and friendly, they communicate quickly. I have heard from friends that returning goods RMA is easy and friendly as well, no bad attitude.

Digitec certainly top the Karma charts for me.

Yeah and you can browse their site in ENGLISH and they also speak ENGLISH. They have always been very responsive and I've had no issue returning something that wasn't working as expected (HD). Remember good service in this country is like common sense "Not so common at all" (M.Twain)

Re: Buying a camera....Where???

I bought a Nikon D80 kit from http://buchmann.ch/

Ok service, website in (sort of) English.

Oh, and the Nikon DSLR is fine, haven't got a clue about their smaller models.

If it's a compact digital camera you are after then go for the Canon G9. That is by far the best compact camera on the market. I bought mine from Architronic that I saw on the Toppreise web site. It was delivered in two days after my prepayment cleared.

I'd also plug Buchman - they were very good when I bought my camera and lenses last year. The website is ok, but the shop is better.

Re: Buying a camera....Where???

I can second Digitec. Very similar low prices to Architronic with the advantage that you can pick up the goods directly at their shop.

Avoid picking up at midday or after 5pm - at those times the queue can be 30-45 minutes, even with the printed-out invoice. Current stuff is usually in stock, otherwise they have it within half a day from their depot. The web site will tell you if/when they have an item at the shop.

Manor, Fust, Migros, Interdiscount and Co tend to have much higher prices (and Migros and Fust mark down end-of-line goods about 6-9 months after everyone else) but at least you can play around with the items, if they've bothered to charge up the batteries.

Re: Buying a camera....Where???

One thing to watch out for is whether the camera will have an original manufacturer's warranty valid in Switzerland. Many online shops offer their own warranty, not the original manufacturer's warranty. Both Buchmann and Tagespreis have done this in my experience.

Not sure what you mean by this - all electronics warrantys are via the place you bought them. Shops like Buchman may offer a better service than that covered by the manufacturers warranty, including repair or replacement, while those that stick rigidly to the warranty from the manufacturer offer return to manufacturer only.

Do you think, with a digital camera, any shop would actually repair the camera itself? And what happens if the shop goes out of business? Where do you go then?

Equipment with only the seller's warranty and no official manufacturer's warranty are usually "grey" imports, not being from the manufacturer's official distributor. There's a chance the official distributor may not repair equipment (in or out of warranty) if not officially imported by them. They can check this through the serial number.

Many of these online shops haven't been in business long, and don't have an actual shop, only operating online. Buchmann has been established a long time, but many others are very new. A seller's warranty may be worth something if the seller is able to fulfill it. A manufacturer's warranty is more reliable.

I get it. You are talking about these online sellers that take up most of a Toppreise search and who all seem to use the same stock control system and who are, for the most part, operating out of their bedroom.

But I don't think you can include Buchman in that category - their shop was around a long time before the web site and they know what they are talking about - at least with optics.

The point about the grey imports is well made but in the EU and I suspect Switzerland too the manufacturers have an obligation based on the original point of sale and warranties are passed on to 2nd hand users. I would see the issue as more like you send something back for repair under warranty to find it ran out before you expected. Further, if you register your purchase with the manufacturer and they don't come back to you because your supplier is not on their list then you are covered.

Toppreise.ch is your best bet .... and then Media Markt as a comparison .... Found my camera this way . Digitech has been really good , IMO . They speak english , have very competent staff who help and prompt delivery .

Returning/repairing the goods via the original point of sale was covered in this thread.
