I wouldn't mind getting a real one, but how do you dispose of it after Christmas? Just about to dig out the pretend one. Girly has decided that tomorrow is the day it goes up |

Yes, getting rid of the real christmas tree is a pain.
I only know (have seen) one method:
Cutting all the branches and pilled them nicely. You can make two things out them:
1 - if you have a garden with barbecue keep them for making a fire;
2 - dispose them in the "grün container"; That's why I don't buy a real one, too much work afterwards...

Best bargains are obtained by going to your nearest forester. I.e. why pay the middle man ? Disposal afterwards via green container (unless you forgot to blow the candles out, in which case the fire brigade acts as disposal service).

you will find that, after the 12th night there will be a growing collection of Crimbo trees near your bins - they will come and collect them. And the only way to get it there is launching it off the balcony (another fine tradition ).
Would you expect anything less? |

Thanks for that Lob, can you imagine the fun the woman downstairs would have it I started hoying stuff off the balcony? She would be on to the hauswart before I had got downstairs to retrieve it. We'll stick with the pretend one I think (I did have a christmas tree accident when a needle got stuck down my thumbnail. It really smarted!) | This user would like to thank Zug bound for this useful post: | |

We always get ours just days before x-mas, but then again we also use real candles (only while we are present - then they are blown out again). So the tree has to be fresh and it will also smell nice. Its probably too early, but closer to x-mas those of you who have cars can go pick one out in the woods (special x-mas tree growing area). The people there will pack it up for you and you can have some Glühwein or a Bratwurst while you pay for your tree (generally between 10 and 20 CHF - it depends on how symmetrical the tree is). I prefer to buy the trees this way as I do not like to support Jumbo and other such Wlamart like abominations. There is one place like that in the sharp curve when you drive down towards Fällanden... or just look for signs.
Also, if you are ever looking for Halloween pumpkins there is a farmhouse on the street just before Dübendorf when you drive down from Gockhausen. They have a huge selection of awesome pumpkins in all sizes - they also sell awesome onions and eggs.

Stephan wolf, that sounds magical. I would love to either not have a tree or put it up on 24/12 and take it down on 26/12. Sadly, for us our six year old rules the roost. I like the idea of candles too, once again though it would all go tits up as she is a bit slow on the uptake re fire and danger |

Sutter, I beg to differ. The sight of a Christmas tree puts me in the mood for about an hour, then I start to get cross with how untidy it makes the room look. Hopefully this year it will be different for us. I think that if you are European, Christmas is supposed to be cold. For the past 8 years we have been in much warmer climates hence my lack of festive feeling. Our girl is very excited to think she may see snow again for Christmas. (I am not )

Actually sutter, I hope I haven't offended you. It is my problem and I wasn't trying to be critical. Sorry |
