PDF-to-paper printing service

Does anyone know of a good service provider (preferably online) that takes a pdf file from you and then delivers back a printed copy bound like a book (softcover).

It doesn't have to be in Switzerland, as long as they ship to Switzerland.

I search a bit and saw a few but they all charge ridiculous amounts and are mostly geared for volume printing, while I only want a single printed copy.

Also I don't need actual book print quality, just plain laser print is fine, what I'm more interested in is a choice of different bindings (from plain ring bindings to softcover book style) and different sizes (primarily A5 and maybe A4).

Re: PDF-to-paper printing service

How many pages? Can you print it yourself, and then find somebody to bind it?

Re: PDF-to-paper printing service

About 100 pages (this time), but it could be more or less other times in future. I only have an inkjet printer not a laser printer, so it would cost too much to print myself.

You can pick up a turn and tumble capable 4C laser printer at inter discount for 300 Chuff's, that will be cheaper for what you want. Also you can get the correct type of paper, cut and even edged at any printers.

Thanks, but I don't want to buy another printer, it's certainly not cheaper as I only have to print and bind PDFs occasionally and I would still have to get it bound.

I'm really looking for a one-stop service where I upload the PDF choose the paper size and binding type, pay and the get the finished result sent via post.
There must be someone somewhere who does this for a reasonable price for single copies.

Re: PDF-to-paper printing service

Your comparative price base has to be 100 chufs.

Say you get through 2 ink cartridges at 35 a piece = 70

I recently saw a DIY ring binder machine at Aldi for about 30.

So there's your 100 .... cheaper than that commercially (if you find somewhere) and your quids in; more than that, then do it yourself - and you're set for next time.

Re: PDF-to-paper printing service

Actually I had more like 20 CHF max. in mind for 100 pages (b/w) ring bound (metal rings, not the nasty plastic rings) with thin cardboard cover, and at most 10 CHF more for a better quality softcover book-style binding.

I believe such prices would still provide for an ample profit margin even in Switzerland but even more so for a company operating abroad in a country with a lower cost base that's why I'm surprised I haven't found anyone offering this yet.

Maybe this is a business opportunity waiting to be taken up by someone?

Re: PDF-to-paper printing service

Actually this is the sort of company I'm looking for, although these are based in Hamburg, Germany (I remember seeing them 15-20 years ago when they where based in the Hamburg Hauptbahnhof). Unfortunately they don't seem to have an online shop / interface to their services (and no prices listed online) but they could be an option:

Re: PDF-to-paper printing service

What you are looking for is called "Print on Demand".

Here is a Wiki link that gives you a few company names. Have a look at their websites (i.e. Lulu).

Re: PDF-to-paper printing service

For A4 documents, you could try this service: http://www.thesisonline.co.uk/

I used them to print and bind my thesis, but the delivery was to a UK address. However, they do state that they deliver internationally as well. Payment was through PayPal.

This looks exactly like what I'm looking for, I guess I have to inquire with regards to international shipping (I hope they don't sting me on that).

Anyone know of a business here that does the opposite. Converts 50-100 paper pages to pdf?

Re: PDF-to-paper printing service

You could use a place like this: https://lpcopycenter.ch/

or, you could use an app like Turboscan on your phone. I recently did a 30 page document and it took less than 10 minutes. You can also always add pages to the document later so you don't have to finish it in one go. Scanning from my printer to create PDFs was such a painfully slow process and this is faster and easier.

Re: PDF-to-paper printing service

Thanks, but out of principle I don’t use Swiss sites that are only in German. Their loss, not mine.

I’m looking to convert about 10 years of paper archives to digital.

A4? If you can come to NE, I will be able to do it for free with my printer. It scans pretty quick automatically. But double sided printed paper would be a bit painful.

Re: PDF-to-paper printing service

Thanks for the kind offer but it is many hundreds of pages, dual sides.

I’ve got a scansnap scanner but that takes a maximum of 10 pages and it is tedious.

Re: PDF-to-paper printing service

If the pages are not bound I would also do it with my printer, the ADF has a declared capacity of 30 sheets (Epson XP 7100) and is relatively fast. Double side handled automatically.
Somehow tedious, but I would rearrange and archive the PDF of each batch while the next one is being scanned, so the scanning time is basically equal to the total time from paper to organized PDF archive in the cloud.

I do it each February with all the paper documents from the previous year, although in my case it is not many hundreds of pages.

If you were close to Zurich I would offer you my printer for a weekend

Re: PDF-to-paper printing service

Again thanks, your offer is very much appreciated. Subject documents are in two ring binders separated by tabs some recto-verso, some not.

I’ve got about 10 binders …

So it’s open binder, select 10, or so, pages. Get out the stapler remover, separate pages from (usually) the bvr slip (not A4) and put in scanner in order. After 5-8 iterations save the file and …

I would not put anyone through this, not for all the beer in England.
