Where to donate food?

Have some canned and dry food to donate. I asked around, but there doesn't seem to be a soup kitchen around Zurich. Any ideas? Thanks.

Re: Where to donate food?

From December 24, 2012 to January 16, 2013, you can send such food to 2 x Christmas. It is a big drive for donations in Switzerland, takes place every year, and it is easy. Just put the stuff into a box, seal it and send it in, no postage needed, you can hand it in at any post office. Volunteers re-package the donations, and the new parcels are forwarded to needy families, half in Switzerland, half in Eastern Europe.

Apart from money, here is what they want most:

"We particularly need everyday necessities. Our experience over recent years has shown that many people enjoy receiving the following items:

Non-perishable foodstuffs such as pasta, rice, oil and tinned goods with a shelf life of at least six months
Toiletries such as soap, shampoo and toothpaste
School equipment such as stationery, crayons and exercise books for children
New children's shoes"

So, if the stuff is still good for a while, this would be the way to go.

On a related issue, if I have leftovers from parties, I package them into portion size and take them to the train station guest service (in Zurich, on the mezzanine level). They have people come in who have been stranded, and can use such goods. Cans will not help them, though

Re: Where to donate food?

You can donate it at the Pfuusbus during winter. It's located at Strassenverkehrsamt Tramstop. It's a bus where homeless can get a place overnight during winter. They only open from 7pm.
