Book exchange

Hi all

Having just returned from a 'shopping' sorry I mean 'visiting family' trip in the UK, and after getting stung for a rather large amount of excess baggage due to buying so many books, I was thinking maybe trying to arrange some sort of book exchange. I'm not sure how the logistics would work? any thoughts? but I know it would be a lot cheaper than a) buying english books here and b) bringing them back in luggage adding to the weight of the said luggage already crammed full of new clothes etc...

Has anybody else ever tried to organise something like this?

Nicky

Re: Book exchange

Why its obvious, a book exchange bartering website for which Heather is going to provide the initial concept and requirements document, Mark is going to implement it , and we are all going to whinge about the end result...

Oh so its been tried before then? suppose it would be hard to arrange and posting is out of question, only solution is to arrange a book club meeting

Re: Book exchange

Or you could leave your old books outside your house in the street and I will collect the presently.

Alternatively , even more intriguing is the concept of bookcrossing. Of course you may not get anything back, but it could work well combined with geocaching.

Re: Book exchange

Well I don't think we need to submit formal requirements or build a website

But Nicky - excellent idea - why not follow it up with a list of books you'd like to exchange or books that you'd like. The best way to lead is by example! Great idea.

I think he meant to say HeatherM, not Heather. I could have said something or edited it, but I might have been accused of over moderating . HeatherM in case you haven't seen her is a new member with a moose for an avatar, she gave a lot of feedback in some of the forum support threads, hence the comments about initial requirements.

Roll on book exchange

I'm a member of bookcrossing, and it's a great way to get a lot of books for free. The easiest way to get some books is to go to the monthly meetups at Restaurant Gloria, Josefstrasse 59 in Züri, where I've ended up getting way more books than I could manage to give. The next meeting is on Thursday, October 12, at 19:00. It's a really nice group of people that usually come.

Other than that, people register their books online and as a member, you can search for them in the online database or get email alerts as to where they might be, and try to hunt them down. There's a forum, so you can arrange to trade books with people there, too. I normally just go to the meetings, since I don't have so much time to look for the books, but however active you want to be, I highy recommend it!

Re: Book exchange

Alternatively you might like to donate your used English books to schools and libraries in Mongolia:

Nicky

I`ve borrowed a lot of English books at my local library and I now donate my books to them. OK, so they probably won`t have a specific book but I`ve found loads of really good ones there that I would never have read otherwise.

Hi Nicky,

Would you be willing to do book borrowing? I have a ton of crime/thriller books but I'm a total book nerd and like to keep all the books I read but I am happy to let others read them as long as I get them back again. If this works for you could I borrow Labrinth from you? I heard people say either it's really good or really bad and have become curious about it.

Hi Lou, yea you can borrow Labrinth, I really enjoyed it, took a while to get into - I'm ok for books at the moment anyway as I brought lots back from my visit to the UK in early August and last week. But when I have read through these i'll be happy to do borrowing - I'm also a bit nerdy with books and have boxes full stored at my parents farm but I have decided now that I am living in a small 2 bed apartment I have to be ruthless and get rid once I have read them otherwise i'll run out of space!

Let me know if you want to meet up to get this book from me

Nicky

That would be great. It's my first day back at work from maternity leave so once things are settled I'll send you a PM to meet up.
