Arts and Crafts Store

hello,

I love to do DIY and arts and crafts, but I find it SOOO difficult to find a store, like Michael's here in Switzerland where they sell materials for Arts and crafts.

Which stores sell materials for arts and crafts?

Thank you

Re: Arts and Crafts Store

Coop Bau&Hobby usually has quite some material for arts and crafts.

Re: Arts and Crafts Store

You can try a Coop Brico-Loisirs, or a Hornbach. But this can be a bit hit-and-miss (for example I went to a Coop Brico-Loisirs looking for wool, and they didn't sell any.... but the Coop city in Lausanne did).

Or you can turn to the catalogues / online shopping. I use Opitec. Their website is not perfect - it can take a while to find what you want, as the search engine's not great. But if you make an order, they send you a nice thick catalogue which you can then browse to your heart's content.

Also see if you don't have a little independent craft shop in your area. For example, in my village there's a small shop which holds a reasonable selection - and I get on very well with the owner.

And for the future... think about visiting Creativa in Lausanne this November. I know that's a long way off and perhaps a bit out of your way, but it's a fantastic place to get materials, see new ideas and also find new suppliers.

Happy crafting!

Re: Arts and Crafts Store

There's one called Ideal Spiess and they have two stores as far as I know, one in Bern and one in Bienne. It's a dedicated arts and crafts company.

My Favorite is Boesner. You can look on the website for the closest shop, or just shop online:

More art than craft. Really nice selection.

Re: Arts and Crafts Store

Coop city and even Manor have craft sections, but if you're looking for a wider selection -Leibundgut in Zurich central is enormous and has the widest variety of craft supplies I've seen. http://www.leibundgutag.ch/
It's been mentioned before in other threads, but just in case.

Re: Arts and Crafts Store

Coop, Migros DYI, Leibundgut is OK - it is big and you can find lots of things but it is not remarkable. I go there from time to time to see what they have but I can't say it is full with everything. And it is expensive. I go to Germany or you can order online , there are many websites that offer very nice arts and crafts supplies.
I know that there are other threads about this so use the Search function - what are you after exactly? It depends if you want to buy it from the store ( which in my opinion is easier as you can see the products and decide ) or online (there are many online stores so this is an advantage that you cand find what you want but it is possible it will cost more and when you receive the product it could be the wrong one.).

Re: Arts and Crafts Store

Hi, wondered if anyone in this thread could help me. I'm an artist and have recently moved to Zurich. I want to try and find an art printers in Zurich or nearby so I can make some art prints of my work (e.g. giclee printing). I've not managed to find anywhere yet online, I'm probably not using the right German terms in google and have contacted a few printing places but with no luck so far. Somewhere like the equivalent of this company in the UK that specialises in fine art printing would be great.

Thanks, Lemady

What permit do you have? Are you married to an EU national? If not, then you may not be allowed to be self-employed in this way.

Re: Arts and Crafts Store

What the????
If this person wants to exploit their creative skills and spend their time making cards to sell who are you to ask them what permit they have! There is no need to shoot them down before they even get off the ground. What ever happened to the help and assistance and not to mention good cheer in this forum?
At least they are being productive.

For online craft stores

Re: Arts and Crafts Store

Profile says student which for a non-EU national rules out self-employment.

Still, if she's married to an EU national and has a student B permit she might be able to do it. Which is why I asked the questions.

Come on, let's think a bit outside of box shall we, she might sell them to some friends, colleagues, make them for some charity event...a few handmade cards won't damage the Swiss economy so terribly...I always appreciated your advice on this type of things but let's not cut any initiative here. A student making some pocket money...or just creating some stuff for her own entertainment/use..

But that's not what she's asking about. She wants to know of any shops where she can put her products out for sale. She's looking for them to place orders for the cards, etc, with her. That makes it self-employment, not selling the occasional card/bookmark to a friend, etc. Self-employment isn't allowed as there's no way to check that the 15 hour maximum working week is kept to which is why students have to be employed by a Swiss employer.

What she could think of doing is seeing if any card/art shops run or would like to run some art/craft classes for children and/or adults and maybe hire her to help with those. Or even see if they could use a part time shop assistant to make use of those 15 hours a week she's allowed to work.

Re: Arts and Crafts Store

This thread has been useful for me--I'm always struggling to find craft/sewing supplies, and find myself putting in "orders" with my American visitors, which is not ideal for anyone! (I just have stuff delivered to them, I don't make them purchase things for my hobbies!)

Right now I'm looking for cherry pits, like the Swiss use in making bean bags or hot/cold cushions (like for headaches or other aches). Anyone know anything about getting those? I hope I don't have to just collect my own pits--I missed cherry season for this project!
