Help finding flexible tripod, please!

Hey folks, I have searched the forum and see plenty of info on the larger tripods or the non-flexible ones. I am looking for something like a smaller gorillapod. One that I can take on vacation, that fits into my purse or small backpack, and that can be bent into various shapes so I can leave the camera on a rock or the car or whatever so I don't have to rely on my shaky hands. I am willing to pay for the real deal instead of a cheap imitator. But where can I get something like this in CH, preferably online? If not online, where in the Bern area?

Here's the research I've done so far. I looked on Amazon.com to get price ideas. Looks like it's about $20 there, with free shipping. Not bad, except the vendor won't ship to CH. Then I tried Amazon.de and something similar is about CHF 27, including the cost for shipping. Not sure if I would get socked with customs fee + SwissPost fee though... Also checked Interdiscount and when I search for Gorillapod I get a hit for CHF 160!!

I know this is probably a cheap piece of plastic from China so I really have a hard time paying so much for it. Even $20 sounds insane to me. But if I have to do it then I will. Just looking for advice on what's a reasonable price, and where to get it (quickly). THANK YOU for any help!!

Photo of what I'm looking for here:

Re: Help finding flexible tripod, please!

Thanks. I just went to their website and the only tripods that come up are for projection screens. But I had not thought of them, so will maybe try to find a store this weekend while out and about.

That made me think of MElectronics, and a search there also turns up nothing. Am I looking for the wrong word in German? I thought tripod was tripod...

Re: Help finding flexible tripod, please!

-> http://www.digitec.ch -> Enter "Gorillapod" into the search box.
Various models available.

You can probably find other resellers via toppreise.ch

Re: Help finding flexible tripod, please!

The Interdiscount offer is a total ripoff.

Try digitec, the original gorillapad is CHF 40, magnetic 38 and the bigger GP3 is 59.
Still overpriced but not as badly.

EDIT: Rainer war schneller...

Re: Help finding flexible tripod, please!

I've seen them all over the place - I think media markt is a god bet. If amazon.de will ship it here (they don't ship all items and you don't know until you put in your shipping address) then I wouldn't hesitate getting it from them. You won't get any extra fees on 27 chf. And you will usually find that it is cheaper, once you put in shipping to CH, they'll take off the 19% German tax...

Re: Help finding flexible tripod, please!

Thanks, rainer_d. Looks like the prices on digitec and even toppreise are still well over 30 CHF. Really nuts!!

If I go with Amazon, do I need to worry about VAT + customs costs + the fee the Post charges to come up with the customs cost? In that case a store here, even at 30+ is a better deal.

Edit: Thanks, drmom! You type too fast!

Re: Help finding flexible tripod, please!

A few years ago I took a newspaper clipping of a gorillapod to a photography shop in Baden and asked if they sold them. He took a look and laughed!
Now they are everywhere.

Re: Help finding flexible tripod, please!

I am so mad. Somehow I turned on one-click ordering and have magically ordered this thing from Amazon.de. Shipping was stated on the item page as being 3.95, but when it did one-click ordering it magically went to 10.95. Ugh. I cannot find a way to cancel it or change it. Live and learn German better, I guess!

Thanks for all the help. I just wasted a ton of my time and yours.

Re: Help finding flexible tripod, please!

You should be able to cancel...amazon is good with these things... Does it say "Bestellung Stornierung" or similar when you look at your "offene bestellungen"?

Here is info from their page:

Auf unserer Website können Sie noch nicht versandte Artikel selbst online stornieren, sofern der Versandprozess noch nicht zu weit fortgeschritten ist.

Which means, for items that have not yet shipped, as long as the shipping process isn't too far advanced, you may cancel your order online.

I would assume doing it within 10 minutes of an order shouldn't be too far advanced?

Correct, you can cancel any Amazon order at any point up until it has been shipped. You can even return it unopened unless I'm very much mistaken. Amazon are pretty good about returns (in my limited experience).

Re: Help finding flexible tripod, please!

to get to your open orders you put your mouse over "mein konto" at the top right-ish part of the page and your should be able to choose Meine Bestellungen. Once those come up, as long as it isn't shipped, there should be an option to cancel (stornier)

The seller (shop?) is even based just down the road in Thun, so the 8chufs postage could be saved, by a personal visit to purchase.

Re: Help finding flexible tripod, please!

Thanks everyone for the suggestion. I have attempted to cancel and we'll see how it goes. When I first made the mistake, there was no option for "stornier" so I panicked. Now I chose that and had to send an email to the seller. I used Google Translate so haha, we'll see how that goes.

Thanks again! Will let you know how it works out.

If you think 59CHF is overpriced try buying it in sydney where you will pay close to 3 times that amount.

59CHF for the big one is a good deal as it handles up to 3kgs which is a decent size SLR

To the OP I have this model and very happy with it

.. or place the camera on the wooden post

Actually I have something similar myself and there's great.

For small things like that I always look on the UK ebay. Many items come from Hong Kong or China. One of these can be bought for £5.69 including postage. Just have to wait a few weeks for delivery. If you want it quick, just use of the the UK sellers. As the value is small, customs is not a problem.
