Laptop repair (or electronic components shop) in Zurich area

Hello all,

I have been in Switzerland for a while already, but this is my first post in EF. I am an Engineering student in Zurich, and recently I had a problem with my laptop: it doesn't get power from the charger! Besides that it works perfectly (with the battery). Being an engineer, I did some troubleshooting and I know what's going on: the DC power jack seems to be detached from the mainboard. It is a relatively common fix but it requires some unsoldering and soldering of the component. I could try to do it myself (I have soldered stuff before) but I would have more peace of mind if someone more skilled than me does it. So the question is: does anyone know of a good (and not so expensive) electronics/laptop repair shop? (in the Zurich area)
Besides, does anyone know of any shop for single electronic components (e.g. resistors, connectors, ICs, that kind of stuff) in Zurich, either a building or online?
Thanks in advance!
C.

Conrad is OK for components.

Re: Laptop repair (or electronic components shop) in Zurich area

Hello, thanks for the reply. When it was bought (~2y ago) it costed around 900 USD. The thing is that the fix is actually quite simple... if I knew that the main board itself is defective, then I would call it game over and just get a new laptop. But in this case the laptop works, it's just the connector that is loose, so I think it would be a waste to discard the whole computer just because of that.

Then just fix it yourself if you are an engineer... otherwise you will end up paying 200chf or so, which doesn't really seem worth it.

Yeah, I might end up doing it myself then... if there's no other way then I lose nothing trying. Thanks for the honest opinion.

I had exactly the same problem on an iBook. Turned out to be a dry joint between one of the power connector legs and the copper track on the motherboard. Very easy to fix. The trickiest bit was opening the case. But there are usually plenty of hints available on line.

Re: Laptop repair (or electronic components shop) in Zurich area

Thread necro because I had a little "drop" issue with my lappy this weekend and I managed to trash the screen. I have it hooked up to an external monitor (my television) for now, but I need to get it repaired quickly. The LCD and the covering plastic/glass is cracked and need to be replaced (very straightforward to do, and I could get all parts in the US overnight and for less than $100), but I don't know where to begin in Zurich. Is there a shop that could source parts, or should I just go to toppreise.ch and hope they can get it to me quickly? It is an Alienware model (Dell marque), but the LCD is shared among this model as well as some Sonys and Lenovos.

try googling the part number. i usually get such stuff from ebay and other online sites. i doubt there are many shops in switzerland holding inventory of these parts and so they would likely need to order it anyway.

That was my thought... I just was hoping for a quicker solution.
