Going to the hairdressers!

My German is pretty good, but I am a bit anxious about going to the hairdressers and explaining that I want a 'short back and sides'.

At the moment my hair around the back and sides is probably about a number 4, but I like to have a number 1 there, and just a few mm's trimmed with the scissors off the top.

Anybody know the technical lingo?

Cheers!

Do as I do and say:

Ich arbeite in der bank, schön und kurtz danke.

Even better, take a photo if you really can't communicate. You can also search the forum for English speaking hairdressers as not surprisingly this has been discussed before.

Good luck

Re: Going to the hairdressers!

Have you considered taking a photograph with you? My hair is a disaster anyway, but since moving here it is even more disasterous. Varying hairdressers have made me look like someone from cell block H, Rosie the rivetter and one memorable one seemed to spend ages snipping, with no discerbable result despite the mountain of hair on the floor
Whoops looks like Gooner beat me to it.

Re: Going to the hairdressers!

For the price of a couple of haircuts you can buy your own electric hair trimmer and do it yourself.

a-ha!

I have some - but 'blending in' the back of my head is quite troublesome.

Done it several times myself, with success, but would much rather just get a nice German lady to do it for me. There's something about having German women run their fingers through my hair..

Re: Going to the hairdressers!

The hairdressers at the end of my road gave me a nice PFO.
They made me an appointment for 12.00 on a Monday. They close at 12.00 for lunch and they also don't open on Mondays.

****s.

Whatever dude.

There is something you must know about hairdressers in Switzerland. They are not hairdressers, they are artists. Also, 99% of them haven't got a clue how to cut hair.

I found a nice barber in Thalwil and he is able to do as I say.

Hairdressers the world over don't give the haircut you want, but the haircut they want you to have.

Re: Going to the hairdressers!

I don't know what you are worried about danm3, how much can you stuff up a SB&S? I´ve got kinda long hair with a twist, one day I let the hairdresser do what she wanted - had to hide my head in a bucket for a few weeks. (YES most said it was a vast improvement.)

This is because they think they are artists. Which they are not. Most of them, are twits.

Which is why I cut my GFs hair. She won't go near them, thinks they are thieving cheats and liars.

However, my old boy in Thalwil is the business. When I gasped at all the grey hair on my head he very nicely told me that it was just blonde. He cuts as I ask.

Re: Going to the hairdressers!

Ask SwissCheddar for a referral. That is, if you don't mind a nice Portguese lady cutting it.

Think he'll share? Im in love....

Re: Going to the hairdressers!

Well, my hair was getting bad enough that if I was waiting for someone at the bahnhof, people started giving me coins and slightly pitying glances.
Having recieved a PFO from the hairdressers down the road and baulked at the frankly ludicrous prices in some of the other local buzzcut establishments, I decided to take matters into my own hands.
Armed with a pair of blunt Ikea scissors, a bathroom mirror and a bin, I've now trimmed the lot. And not buzzcutted, either. So far, no children have seen my hair and cried and no adults have given me a stare over and above the usual revulsion I seem to draw from the locals.
I just think of all that money I've saved...

Hey gooner, what's the name of your barber in Thalwil? I'm looking for a good men's haircut (close, high and tight) on that side of the lake...
