Ric, just go to some nearby places and ask if they speak english, how much it costs, etc, and then decide to stay or "pop back later" (i.e. never) depending on whether you felt they understood you or not. Have some sense of adventure!

I really don't think you need to come to Zürich just for a haircut

Great thread.

Does anyone know the French equivalent for "2 on the sides and a 3 on top"?
The combs are in millimetres here. A number 2 is about 8-9mm, a number 3 is 12mm I think.

Re: English speaking Hairdresser/stylist/barber needed!

I usually get my conservative haircut with just 3 words of German:
- kurz (short)
- Ohren frei (ears free as in cut around)

Don't like stylists either, so I go for a "coiffeur" in a blue collar neighborhood, preferably catering to Turkish or Balkan patrons.
Usually around 25-30 Sfr.
Works for me!

Pourriez-vous me faire une coupe avec la tondeuse? (Incidentally, tondeuse is also used for a lawnmower )

Peigne n° 2 sur les cotés et n° 3 pour le dessus.

(All combs for a buzzcut have the number and the mm value embossed. I've seen them on Babyliss, Philips, Braun and a number of others)

Re: English speaking Hairdresser/stylist/barber needed!

I have a hairdresser who is out of this world. I used to get my hair cut in the States when I could make it back and now I would not change from Gerardo for love or money. I tell him he has replaced retail therapy for me....and I am pretty picky

Re: English speaking Hairdresser/stylist/barber needed!

My wife is an English speaking Zurich based hairdresser. She was freelance in the UK for about ten years but gave up when I made her move here. She does look after a few friends and and others and wouldn't mind a few more customers. PM me if you are interested. Maybe I should get her to register here.

Zug where in, is an English speaking hairdresser to be found for my shaggy partner....?.....he actually doesn't like to talk while his hair is being cut because he doesn't know anything about sport and never take holidays, however if anyone knows an English speaking hair shortener who likes to talk about the stockmarket.......

Behind the HauptBahnof, there is a street the runs along (not sure of the name, will have to find out from my neighbour) in the area of the Museum. There are a number of hairdressers/barbers - Average price 20-25 CHF.

Re: [Haircut] Seek English-speaking Hairdresser/stylist/barbee

A mate of mine is opening a new salon in Kloten called 'The Londoner'. It's opening in about three weeks I think. He's English and his girlfriend is Swiss and speaks very good English. They're both very good hairdressers. They used to work for Kuhn and some posh places in London I think before that.

Yes. Maybe he could see you as an emergency patient. I'll get the full details and post them.

Hey all,

This is extremely vain of me , but I've been here 5 months now and really could do with a haircut.. I've been back to England a few times since then and had it done then but its time to take the plunge and find somewhere here. I've been too scared to risk somebody with a poor grasp of English in case I end up with a skinhead or something even worse.

I live in Basel but I'm willing to travel up to Zurich or places close by.

Any help would be appreciated

I think I'm probably due one now. It's looking extremely shaggy, as people on Tuesday's Curry Night will attest too.. And that ones about 10 minutes tram ride away. Thanks!

Or should I say No thanks. The guy went nuts, I am now minus a fringe that I had been cultivating for over a year and look like a 12 year old boy.. At least he was cheap.

I think I will have to venture as far as Zurich in future.
