Hi, BotSpanx,

There is a hackerspace called Starship Factory, near Dreispitz and St. Jakob, which has a lot of maker stuff, although no welding yet (but it is strongly desired to get the right equipment). Feel free to drop by.

Thanks, looks interesting. I'm in the process of acquiring parts for an oxy-propane torch setup. I doubt it would work for TIG welding, but it would certainly handle any brazing tasks. Is the Starship Factory in a space that is legal for open flame work? Any plans for adding machining equipment (lathe, mill, etc.)?

Re: Workshop/hacker space for rent in Basel?

I'll have to look into Starship Factory as well, thanks for this reminder.

While we're dreaming of facilities, maybe we can self-educate with something like this. I know I'll need all information I can get..

Re: Workshop/hacker space for rent in Basel?

First of all, by the way, apologies for the untranslated German websites, the effort of having an English one is in progress but not finished and the translated content got obsoleted by a recent move of the space. :/

I'm not certain, but it should probably be possible to do open flame work in the covered back yard. A CNC mill is in the works according to the new space site, for anything else you should know that Starship Factory is not a space where there's a lab management buying you all the tools they think are important, but it is a participatory organization where you can suggest what should happen and what tools you want to get. So I think you could be just the person who makes the lathe happening, for example. (So far there is a crowdfunding effort for it but it wasn't getting much funds yet since there were a lot of move related things people spent money on).

Either way, I think it's probably best if you just give the place and the people a look.

Sounds good. It looks like meeting times are Tuesday, and Friday? Is that when it's best to come by?

Yes, those are the times when it's guaranteed there will be somebody around and the doors will be open. (During the rest of the time it depends on whether someone with a key happens to be in.)

I hope you're one step closer to finding what you need now!

I never did, but I would not be opposed to seeking out a legal space for serious "hobbying" as a group. I don't have a tremendous amount of time to dedicate to finding something (grad-school), but I'm not useless either. Anyone else interested in a shared commercial space for something more hardcore than puzzles?

Yes. I'm in a similar spot time-wise, but would love to be able to access a workshop. (Last time I asked something similar, a couple of more baselites did express interest, so... bump!)
I am interested too. In 6 months from now but truly interested.

My time for organizing this sort of thing is, for the moment, already spoken for by graduate work. I thought I might be able to front an industrial hacker space part-time, but I don't see a way to do it while staying married.

Me too. A CNC mill and a mini-lathe would go a long way toward fabricating serious parts. Then all we would need is a manual vertical mill, a drill press (didn't see if you have one), and a bench grinder, and we could make whatever

What would be, in your opinion, the advantage of creating this Ğindustrial hacker spaceğ over advancing the existing project? (I'm asking because I think the amount of time which flows into administrative tasks on even an extremely unbureaucratic hackerspace is often severely underestimated.)

There would be no advantage to setting up a new one, if one already exists. Originally I was only interested in space that was legal to work in. It didn't need to be a hacker space...that would have just been convenient. It's obvious to me now however, that to do what I would like to, I need tooling that isn't feasible to get on my own, and the time to administrate a hacker space, even if I wanted to, just isn't there.

As a science graduate student, almost all my waking time is spent in the lab. I would like most of what's left to go to my wife. I can come up with time to do some work on personal projects, but I can't be the spearhead in a campaign to create a workshop. When I made the original post, things were a bit more relaxed, but the foreseeable future is pretty densely packed.
