Hmmm glass of wine eh? I will have to give that a try. Thanks!!
I’m sure all your problems with fruit flies have unexplainably disappeared as it seems that my fruit flies have put the word out that all other fruit flies in Zurich are invited to my place for free wine.

I am informed that a fruit fly is one step up from a fruit and nut cake in the samsara tradition.

Re: How to avoid fruit flies???

After being invited round to a friends house for a glass of wine I keep coughing up small drowned fruit flies. Can anyone help me get rid of them?

I wouldn't think about the ones you coughed up...worry about the ones you swallowed.

And buy your friend one of the solutions mentioned earlier in the thread.

Barbra.

Re: How to avoid fruit flies???

We got rid of fruit flies with a bottle of wine. We left out a bottle of wine one night on accident, the next morning we didnt have any fruit flies. We saw they were in the bottle. We just leave a bottle in the kitchen now and shake it up a little from time to time. We havent had Fruit flies since July.

Same here...the little guys seem to love to drown in wine. An open bottle of the cheapest possible wine has been very effective at collecting the flies, who now die a glorious drunken death. Just don't forget which bottle of wine is the fly graveyard when you have had a little too much!

Re: How to avoid fruit flies???

Not sure about Ants, but Slugs love beer (bit of a waste I know but...). Great way to attract them to a trap.

For the flies, we had a period when these 'uggers became a real menace, so I used a combination of containers with wine and/or vinager as traps (including the one's from Jumbo, plus some glass jars with a perferated cover). One or 2 of these were near one of these 'blue' zapping lamps, as often they would just sit around the trap and not actually go in.

Basel plants are good at attacting these flies as well and the soil makes an excellent breeding ground. So having one of these in the kitchen can have it's drawbacks. Will try gowing some of these plants without soil next year to see if this is successful and helps with minimising these annoying flies.

When I lived in Vietnam, we found that Red Bull was very efficient to kill ants. They'd run around for a bit and then drop dead! We'd put a few drops on the ground in the evening, and find them all dead in the morning...

Re: How to avoid fruit flies???

I couldn't be asked making my own trap or wasting a bottle of wine (even a little!) so I went to Coop and bought a fruit fly trap. Basically a cup with a lid on it that has holes. There is a vinegar solution you pour into the cup (comes with the trap).

You can't put all fruit in the fridge (bananas) and so we put this out on our window sill and the the flies were gone by the next morning.

Might not be BIO, but it worked!

Great fun !!! I love watching drunk animals (not how they die) !! It is hilariously funny !!
Drunk chickens for instance, an absolute screem to watch, they don't end up dead though

Re: How to avoid fruit flies???

I've gone from mickey taking to desperation. Over the weekend we have become infested with the little shaggers. I know that they aren't dirty and they are harmless but they are bloody annoying. I'm just going to make some traps now and if that fails it is the chemicals from COOP.
I did find a way to kill them involving the electric bat thing, it was trial and error. Because they are so light swatting them doesn't work, holding the bat paralell to the surface they are on and tapping it lightly causes them to fly onto the rails and a moderate bang is proof of their demise. The only problem with this approach is the number that we have. I'd say there were around 150 in the flat. GRRRRRRRRR

Re: How to avoid fruit flies???

We have the odd wee flying bug thing. Will'o-the-wisp types ones that you can't focus on.

SWMBO is convinced they are dive bombing her.

Anyway, I'll try and get them pished.. see if this works...

I assume that I would be able to differentiate a fruit fly and fruit bat?

Re: How to avoid fruit flies???

I left a glass of wine in the kitchen. After 3 days, there were about 26 fruit flies in the wine...and now...our fruit fly situation is that the number has dwindled down to around 3-4 flies now...

Worth a try!
