don't get sucked in by a swirl and hit your head on a rock.
That's how people die from what I hear.

Also the water in the rivers is cold, you can't stay in for long if you don't have a seal-like fat substratum.

Re: Diving in the Verzasca river... Any advice?

Jesus, I am used to uninformed half knowledge on this forum, but this thread really lowers the standards... the people who die in the Verzasca are swimmer, not diver.

Verzasca: The river is one of the most popular dive sites in Switzerland, famous for the clear visibility, which is unusual in fresh water

Diving: Scuba diving is safe, much safer than say motorcycling. The vast majority of diving accidents happen through decompression illness - which is kind of difficult to get in a Swiss river as it typically involves some depth of water. The other source of accidents is involving either caves or wrecks...

Cold: Is absolutely no topic for scuba divers, you just need to dress appropriately. I have seen people going ice diving in Switzerland in mountain lakes at 1800 M in the middle of winter....

Re: Diving in the Verzasca river... Any advice?

I went to Verzasca one month ago and I was staying in a guest house which I'm pretty sure it offers this service. The house is called Posse on booking.com.

I don't recommend that you do this without proper guidance. The river seemed pretty aggressive in some places.

Thanks everyone for the tips and advise. At the moment I am yet to find a guide so this time I might not be able to make the dive, will continue to look and hopefully in the future I can.

Cheers

Switch the language to English and you get:

Recreation[edit]
The river is a popular scuba diving location and the valley is used for bungee jumping. The diving conditions are usually best from late spring to early autumn.[2]

Or is it touting false info to folks on the internet

Ultimately a meaningless report when it comes to evaluating risk as it gives no clue as to the number of people actually indulging in each activity (and the frequency) and thus the relative level of risk. 587 mountain hiking deaths sounds a lot but maybe not compared to the number of people actually doing it. 411 deaths from mountain climbing is almost certainly an indicator of much higher risk given that significantly fewer people practise that.

57 diving deaths sounds quite high compared to the number of people that do that in Switzerland (as opposed to in the sea on holiday).

5 deaths in football? how does anyone kill themselves playing football? or does this include heart attacks (I thought not)?

44 hunting deaths? I guess that's hunters shooting mountain bikers. Or does that count as a mountain bike death?

I agree. 5 deaths in Switzerland alone is about the same number as the global fatal shark attacks per year! And the report does not really explain at all what's wrong. I better stick to the tropics then...

Hope you write back to us your impressions on diving in Verzasca river. I saw many people doing kayak there and it looked very impressive. I would argue that more impressive than diving.

For diving I would better choose the sea or some other place which has more fauna than this river.

Resurrecting an old thread...

Did you ever go in the end? Who with?

I've just been offered to go for a weekend, but it costs as much as a week diving in Malta (including flights ), so curious to see if it was worth it and who you went with.

M.

So far I havent managed to dive it. There is scuba viva in zurich which has dive weekends and trips and occasionally go there. They have a trip planned in September to Verzasca. I have not signed up to that yet, I have signed up to the Rhinefalls night dive and will see how that goes first as thats August
