Re: Duck Fleas

Duck fleas are actually not fleas at all, and only related to ducks because they're ideal hosts.

That being said, this year is pretty bad as the winter wasn't cold enough to kill them, and they proliferate in this hot weather.

The best is to rinse yourself immediately after you get out of the lake, and then to towel yourself vigorously, scrubbing everywhere. It should prevent the bugger from rooting ino your skin to lay their eggs.

Re: Duck Fleas

Yes and there are quite a lot of them in lake Neuchâtel this year. They're not actually fleas but parasites that like to burrow under the skin.

I've never had any but my Swiss friend told me to rub myself briskly all over with a towel once I got out of the lake and to have a shower as soon as I got home. Have the water as cold as you can bear it for the first rinse as they don't survive in cold water. There are lots of warm spots in the lake this year which is why they are thriving.

Having said that I met the same friend for coffee on Thursday and she was covered in 'bites' she'd acquired last Sunday so maybe her method isn't that good after all.

Consider yourself lucky that the eggs can't hatch, we're not good hosts for them

It's actually pretty harmless: the main risk is infection if you scratch too much. Well, except for a friend who got some in her eye... That was nasty

Was always a favourite topic of my wife's mother when we told her about our Rhine swimming.
Never actually got any of these; unless they were masked by my other imperfections!

will you please stop it - I had an egg (CHICKEN!) for dinner

there is a nasty type of worm that can crawl around under your skin (or so I read...) and eggs hatching there reminded me of it 'orrible, 'orrible

Better not google

Re: Duck Fleas

I think it is like with mosquitos, some people get bitten while others don't.

Cercariae are also in some areas more than others, in the same lake. The signs are this year at every beach we have been so far, but we have never gotten them. Just yesterday we were both on SUP boards for a long time, hopping on and off to swim, no parasites.

But I think taking shower right when you get out of the water is a good idea, wash with soap everywhere and rub with a towel a lot. I wouldn't wait till one gets home. What seems to be annoying is that some people develop an allergy reaction to the parasite.

I also use an oily sunscreen that really sticks, I wonder if that is a turn off for those creepy things.

After swimming in Lake Zug we always take a dip in the kiddie pool which is chlorinated. That should kill everything. At least that is what I hope......

No showers at the little secluded beach where we swim so no choice but to wait until we get home.

Re: Duck Fleas

I was once bitten badly on the north shore of lake Geneva, [in Geneva on a beach at the "swimming pool"], the result is a bit like mosquito bites.
I was told the fleas are on the beach

Wrongly informed, please ignore!

I was once bitten badly on the north shore of lake Geneva, [in Geneva on a beach at the "swimming pool"], the result is a bit like mosquito bites. I was told the fleas are on the beach and you get bitten when sunbathing, but not when actually swimming in the lake water. I later swam at the lido on the southern lakeside, and was not bitten, but then I didn't lie down.....
Actually it's the opposite. You catch them in the water and the water needs to be above 20° for them to survive which is why there have been so many this year.
It would be extremely difficult to get duck fleas from the beach.

Re: Beware of duck fleas in the lakes

Well I usually put alot of sun oil on before I go in the water.Maybe they slip off. I have never had any problem. But lets see the postive side-they are less dangerous than sharksJust wondering if there are also swan fleas

Yep, they're a big deal at the lac d'Annecy. A couple of years ago, they killed all the ducks & turned over 10cm of gravel on the lake floor by the beaches. Can't have the tourists getting nibbled...

Isn't the Lac d'Annecy one of France most polluted lakes? One would guess they had other worries than duck fleas!
