package received from foreign country: import tax?

I just moved to Switzerland from Germany. My mom sent me a package by mail (from the Netherlands, I still had some stuff there), with some clothes and shoes. I just got a slip of paper from the Swisspost that I can pick up the package at the nearest post office (I wasn;t at home when the delivery person come), however, it looks like I need to pay some 30 francs. What is this for, is it maybe import tax?
I'm guessing you don't need to pay for delivery service right? My mom already paid for that when she sent the package.

So if it's import taxes, do I really need to pay that for stuff that was already mine in the first place (it's some nice clothes but I've owned them for over a year, total worth new is 200 euros so by now maybe 50 or so?), Is there a way to complain about this?

And what if I don't accept the package, will they send it back to the sender? (this wouldn't be so bad, if it gets sent back home, I'm going there for christmas anyway so I can pick up the stuff there). Or will they just throw it away...

I think that if the value of the goods is over 50chf,you have to pay some money.I've had to pay in the past for birthday presents sent to me from abroad, which is really annoying. The fact that they're your own clothes doesn't make a difference.

What did the paperwork say the value was? Did the declaration form say it was personal items?

Re: package received from foreign country: import tax?

I had this same problem a few months back.

A parcel sent from USA, and form saying I have to pay Sfr35 to retrieve it from post office. Apparently it was over the limit for a "gift" and I had to pay the difference.

I asked the person who sent it what it was? "Oh just some of my home-made creams and other stuff" - with a value of USD 150 on the form (my friend over-values her home-made stuff).

As I do not spend Sfr35 on my creams I was not going to pay for some unknown quality kitchen creams and "stuff", so I sent it back. No problem to PO. Except from friend who was disgusted with me.

Hmm yea, if I would have known... I don't know how much you should value clothes which are clearly not new anymore... It should be significantly less then the new price... So, arguably around 50 francs?

No idea really, I haven't asked my mom what she value she put in the paperwork yet cause I don't want to make her feel bad about this... If I end up returning the package she will find out though
If this is at all possible, i will let them return it to my parents, rather then pay extra for it, I don't need the stuff right now and can pick them up later. So it would just be a bit of a waste of time. But, an interesting learning experience about living in switzerland

Re: package received from foreign country: import tax?

But will the post office return it to the sender without SOMEBODY having to pay the return postage?
