Re: Evaluation of US high school diploma

Thanks guys! This discussion is super! May I shoot another question? A university requirements are: "Diplôme d'études secondaires supérieures + 2 années d'études universitaires" How someone can have 2 years of university education before actually starting it? Sorry for silly questions but I am familiar with only North American version of education : 1.school-college-maybe university 2.school-university

Study in the states as many suggested here would be great but it will almost double the cost of education which will not be cheap as it is.

What they mean is that you either have two years in a North American university before enrolling into a Swiss institution, or successfully sit the relevant 5 Advanced Placement tests right after graduating high school which then allows you to enroll into university here.

In terms of fees Switzerland universities are actually dirt cheap. The fees are 500 CHF per semester plus whatever course material costs, but it's never more than maybe 2'500 a year. Which is really good considering in Geneva you could say attend the International High Studies Institute which is far more renowned than what has been suggested above...

There is a big difference between recognition and acceptance. Some top universities are choosy on admission. Just like in the US. Harvard may reject a MS candidate despite a BS from another accredited US university.

No no I was already accepted at the masters level, which I had filled out explicit paperwork to the letter to be in and got a letter confirming my intentions. Which should translate into starting with a masters program.

As it was, I could not go to anybody else for a second opinion, the office of the Rector etc. all said this one person was responsible for my subject and he was the only one to make this decision.

Considering I went to a university that is in much a similar standing as the ETH worldwide with regard to the quality of education and the university I applied to does not come close, I do not believe it was a matter of credit acceptance. I also got a lovely rant on the US university system and how it is far less superior etc. We are all entitled to our own opinions but in a situation where you are sitting face to face with the person who can say yes or no to your degree, I found it very unprofessional. All the more reason to go somewhere else.

I would really appreciate if somebody can share their experience evaluating a US based high school diploma in Switzerland.
The answer for the US is here:

The general comment that High school diploma allowes to follow a higher education in Switzerland must be competed by the small print... and that is a little bit more difficult, as it depends where you apply. From that list, I can see that they often require:
- either two years of university before applying to Swiss university,
- or 5 Advanced Placements with certain specifications (two language, maths, sciences and minimal grade for each 3...)

Careful: Those as not accepted as subjects in Advanced placements and High school diploma (if your son's high school diploma has one of those, it won't be accepted, says the website):
  • Art History
  • Computer Science
  • Comp Government & Politics
  • Environmental Science
  • Music Theory
  • Psychology
  • Studio Art
  • U.S. Government & Politics
And don't forget to ask their language requirement when you have found a university that seems to fit your search... son will be studying in the local language, it be you find something in English (there was a thread about that in this forum somewhere).
